Sorry for dragging this back on topic.... But;
New sails to 'refresh' a fleet- makes sense- see Tasar/ 3000/ Buzz/ RS 400 etc etc. Sails are a 'consumable' and will work there way down the fleet- top sailors sell them on etc. New sails are generally expensive- but typically the new style sails did not represent a significant increase in cost over old style (3DL/ membrane sails excluded!)
New boom- definitely not a consumable. Small benefit for the price outlay (similar to the price of a new mainsail for a lot of classes).

Unfortunately, as number of posters have shown the boom on the 300 has been a bit of a consumable, due to the weakness of the goose neck jaws, and in smaller numbers, the tendency to fold aroubd the vang attachment. So in this case I think you understate the benefit....certainly I will be more content, knowing that the 100s I have spent travelling to a nats for example, will not be wasted when the boom gives up.

I have seen through this thread about the number of failures- but if it was that bad I thought LDC/ RS would have sorted in out in the last 15 or so years since the class was designed. The class circuit is now reasonably small with 20 entries at last years Nationals so not a huge amount of sailors campaign the boat sufficiently to warrant this? With boats typically selling for circa £3,500 a new boom at £500 represents a fairly high proportional cost. |

Why would they if they sold parts of the failure? You can chose to believe it or not but I have owned 3 300s and sargesail has sailed the class since the begining so there is a fair bit of experience talking here!

Also until the one piece ally jaws on the 100 came along no-one could really see a good solution... I minimise the problem by through bolting the jaws (internal and external) and hanging the outhaul off that. But they still deformed a little.
