It never ceases to amaze me why folk get so wound up by what goes on t'internet anyway, it's got an off switch and none of it means anything, it's just chatter and often ill formed or inaccurate as has clearly been demonstrated.

"I read it on the internet so it must be true", sadly is no longer the case, the CIA edit wikipedia ffs.

I accept that the 420's didn't have winged rudders, but I am also sure that Radixon knows the difference between a 420 and a N12, so I am still not at all clear what was seen...

The thing is ,as long as the 470 is an Olympic class the 420 will be the trainer boat.  I suspect if the 470 lost its Olympic status the 420 will slowly go the way of the mirror and the cadet, and we'll see more nad more fevas and 29ers.

i'm not arguing for or against the 420, I'm just attempting to explain their existence and popularity.

And Tom yes, I was looking forward to seeing the foiling 420s at the TT this weekend Wink
the same, but different...

So have we all agreed that it wasn't a 420 that had foils on? That's a shame, my time looking at stern wake of 420s from the BM was wasted!!
Needs to sail more...

Random question - why do we even still use the 420 nowadays? When I was younger I couldn't think of anything more boring when I saw them at the sailing club and the Dinghy Show, and nowadays they just look old and aged.

Because they teach the skills needed to be a top racing sailor in a big, competitive fleet. The fact that they are still popular when faced with compietition from the 29er might just tell you that speed isn't what everyone dreams of.

They're also the obvious trainer for the 470!

to Rupert...last year 50 boats turned up for the nationals which is on a downward trend (according to the stats on Y&Y) compared to the 29er which is on the up seeing 64 in 2013. Big competitive fleet knowledge is gained when you go out and do it, the boat on its own can't teach you that. Is the 420 really that popular?

to Winging It...so is the 29er to the 49er - it's a damn sight more modern and the fleets are just as big or bigger than the 420/470, and how many people ACTUALLY sail a 470 on a more club basis?

there's one out fairly often at Hunts, but I know what you mean - not many in the uk.  But go abroad and they're eveywhere.
