So it looks like a lot of support then !  ... as stated we will be trying one out once the sail plan is totally set.  The ICON foredeck is long and proportionately very much longer than most of the boats being mentioned so the jib will be long in the foot and the pole very long as well.

Any thought out there about other systems to consider ?  What about a light/small carbon 'jib boom' - one that is restricted so it can keep the jib 'down' ?  Any practical input would be useful - if truly practical such a system could give most of 'dangly' benefits without all that 'orrible windage round our v.efficient Icon mast !?

If you mounted a jib boom a little way in from the tack, you could work it so the jib was automatically flatter when going up wind than when reaching. You could even have the take off point adjustable so you can alter the fullness when sailing.

Aha! Rupert. When I was a callow youth sailing model boats some sailors had the jib boom pivoting behind the forestay, perhaps 15% back. If the jib was close hauled then the foot was tight, if you sheeted out the foot had shape. The boom had its own little stump mast so that it could have a kicker. The usual method of keeping the boom down was to have the jib luff in front of the pivot between the boom and deck. This stopped the boom from flying and you could adjust it by tensioning the luff. I have no idea if this of any use. I am just rambling.

The very odd Escape dinghy has something very similar on its main sail - the boom is bent at rightangles and fits into its own pot, behind the mast. This negates the need for a kicker. Of course, it also takes away all the adjustment a kicker gives, but for a play boat is is very neat. There must be a way of keeping the advantages and gaining back the adjustment.

Re. the N12 above - a jib boom and dangly stick - that's just crazy!  See how much the main boom is bending though...

A jib boom on its own would help with leach control, but doesn't do much to aid goosewinging, does it?  The K1 has a jib boom which might be worth a look.

And just for Jim C, Bruce Farr invented everything...this on a 3.7 special run of 10 boats built in Sydney with main and jib, a variation on the 3.7 class which just has a main.

Were those "3.7 singlehanders" designed by Farr? I thought at the time ('76?) the claim was that they were designed by a local skiffy.  I understand one is still in storage around Hornsby is that the boat you posted or is that an old pic?

Nice looking boats, what happened to them?

EDIT - whoops, better PM to avoid thread drift.

A good question - it has been alleged that they were designed by Farr and built by a Sydneysider.  2 have just been sold on ebay which is where the photos came from.
