Is it actually inverted? Difficult to tell from that angle. It looks as if they are pretty shy, so it could well just be side bend.

And aren't they sailing the boat gloriously flat. Lesson for everyone there (except 12footer sailors, who march to a different drummer)

Exactly what I was thinking on both counts.  Nice photo.

The other 49er photo appeared in DSM a couple of months ago.

I'm guessing thats why you have the mainsheet in hard downwind on the 49er to act as a backstay

The caps look after the topmast fairly well actually.  We trim the main to achieve optimal airflow through the slot, everything else is just slow.  The topmast will bend about a foot, but only sideways (theres very little forward pull on the top of the mast, due to the apparent wind)

That photo of Iker with the bent mast was taken at Palma I think (either that or Hyeres).  Although the mast wasn't broken, it was written off.  The topmast in that situation will never return to it's normal shape.  We did the same thing in Palma two years ago, one of our caps snapped downwind, and bent the mast into a permanent curve.  Definately one for the insurance company.  The lesson there is, always check you shrouds and change them fairly regularly...

Oh, and sailing a 49er permanently flat downwind isn't that easy ;)

Flat upwind.  Old photo though, couldn't find our new batches. This was taken on Christmas day, and we were absolutely freezing.

wont that mean that when/if the new full carbon mast arrives there will be more full breakages as opposed to just bending?

or, being carbon fibre, would they just flex and spring back?

It's got a fair bit of glass fibre in it, so no, I think it would destroy it.  to be honest, when we screw our top sections, we genrally get a whole new mast (unless it was brand spanking new).
The top sections have a limited range of flex, before they pass that point of no return and are damaged.

The main thing to watch for is the caps and shrouds.  it's so easy to look out for the mast, and neglect the wires, or even worse, as I did in Moscow, accidently pull the quickpin out for the windward caps downwind.  That's never fun.

so in the long run it wont make much odds?

it must make the boat much nicer to sail though as those masts are fairly hefty when compared to the new ones (4kg heavier i think?). must help with pitching when hoisting, dropping, gybing, starting etc.

iv got to say, a 49er is one boat i have always wanted to try. they just look so much fun and challenging at the same time.

They're really nice boats to sail, and actually not that tricky to keep upright.  the wings actually stop the boat flipping so it's pretty accessible to most sailors (once they've sailed 29ers for example).

The new mast comes with a square top mainsail, which looks great.  It's far more responsive to gusts, and opens the boat to a wider range of weights.

The only issue is they are keeping the current kite, so that will no longer be mast-head, which I don't like.

The weight won't make much difference I don't think, as we sail the boat upright the whole time (unless something goes wrong), but it will be interesting to see if this is actually the case...

What boats have you sailed up til now?

well i have only been sailing for about 2years. spent 1and 1/2 in a laser and managed to get a 19th in one race this nationals. ended up fairly low down due to gear failure though

i now have an rs300 which i love sailing and can get around courses quite happily without capsizing.

i have spent quite a bit of time in a 29er, 420 rs500 - somtimes on my own, helming from the wire (love it). i used to sail 405's for a while when i was that sort of weight. mostly crewing as i like trapezing but i can also helm a 29er reasonably well.

i would love to get into a twin trapeze boat but theres nobody in my club my who i would be able to sail with. also, llandudno set small courses

just out of curiosity, were you at this years nationals which we held? i was doing rescue boat

sorry forgot to mention, the new mains look great, but with a longer mast but the same jib and kite, wont the rig feel unbalanced?

the lighter mast will make it much easier for newcomers to the class though as they will be able to right it more easily.

what sort of weight would you want to be for helming? im about 67kg, fit and fairly strong and got loads of energy (being a mere 18)
