Id not thought of that, are WS the governing body for land yachts?

With regard to the dinghy classes, there is plenty of precedent of mixed teams being successful in Fireballs, 470s, 505s, 14’s and there are presently several top Merlin Rocket teams either as mixed combos or all girl combos, so the mixed two person dinghy, which I guess will be the 470 (Paris games and all) is probably a change for the good and addresses your point.

Perhaps the mixed philosophy could have been extended to the two person skiff classes, which would have left room to select singlehanded classes that encompassed all sexes and weight possibilities.

How many women have won a mixed worlds in those classes? In Fireballs I think it's one woman in 53 years, as a crew; in 470s it looks like none in half a century; same with 505s and 14s. So 0.5% of world champs have been women. That hardly looks like an even playing field.

As far as I can see even the Europe was utterly dominated by men, which makes sense since a 65kg man has more muscle than a 65kg woman and can therefore exert more righting moment. Women have less strength, all else being equal, than men and therefore are at a disadvantage.

Having a mixed Skiff and men's and women's doublehanded dinghies could be good. Unfortunately the media and World Sailing seem to be fixated by the mistaken belief that Skiffs are the future and dinghies are the past, which is completely bonkers.

As far as the offshore event goes, the proposal mentioned by Seahorse is for a several day event, and I can't find any 24 hour limit. The event could therefore run along the coast, with marks near small ports which could be a good way of bringing the Games to the people and giving some intense roundings. A course winding in and out of the spectacular parts of the French Atlantic coast, past the famous headlands, islands and lighthouses, could be as much of a TV fest as the Tour de France. And a two-handed multi-day race, even in light winds, is likely to be as physical in many ways as a Finn race in the same sort of weather pattern.

The other issue is that it's hard to ignore such an enormous section of the sport as offshore-style boats. Even on the inland lakes, "offshore" style boats are very popular, as the vast Surprise fleets on Lake Geneva, the inland section of the FFV HN, or the Great Lakes PHRF/OOD scene shows. Personally I'd reckon a fairly small, low tech boat like the J/80 would be the way to go to keep costs down as much as possible - according to the class reports the bare cost is the same, per sailor, as the Moth!

If World Sailing wasn't fixated on kiting, a sport that attracts almost zero racing interest, the situation would be much easier. As far as I can see, the NAs have to give the final tick to the slate so hopefully they will look at kitefoiling, see that almost none of their members do it, and keep more dinghies.

Gate starts look like they could be exciting to watch, all sitting with their brakes on, wonder what percentage of participants race on water ?
Ice sailing looks good to, perhaps they could have Torvil and Dean style ice yachting.

The women’s slopestyle final was held in 30 knot winds... given the baggy attire and the attrition rate of the competitors in such unsafe conditions, that was pretty much ice yachting.

"How many women have won a mixed worlds in those classes? In Fireballs I think it's one woman in 53 years, as a crew"

Just for the sake of accuracy, Joan Ellis won the 1975 Fireball Worlds as a helm.  She was crewed by her husband, Art.

There have been plenty of other women Fireball sailors who have achieved podium places in major Fireball events over the years.  The latest is Penny Clark who, crewed by husband Russ, was second in this year's worlds and third in the Nationals.

And it would be interesting to see how the stats pile up between podiums and overall numbers. Because we do need to improve female participation in the sport. It’s the easiest way to buck the demographic/millenarian trend.

It was really interesting watching Opi Girl’s squad at Weymouth last month. Looked as if they were much more comfortable behaving as girls (in a good way eg group heads shoulders knees and toes to warm up) than they would have been if meshed into the old national and Intermediate squads in smaller numbers. Going to be really interesting to see the results. I’ll go with a bold prediction that they will perform better as a cohort and stay in the sport longer than their predecessors.

Fireball Nationals: 4 female helms from 27 entries. Second and third, 13th, 25th.

We need to be careful about what our biases and heuristics shape us to think don’t we?o

I’d back that prediction too Matt... certainly from the snow sports and surfing things I’ve witnessed, early women’s only sessions seems to serve two purposes- 1) provide an environment for elite level athletes to rise to the top and 2) provide a bullsh*t free environment for young women to continue to practice the sport they love without necessarily dealing with the emotional and/or social pressures of engaging with the other sex during such a formative period of adolescence.

I’d imagine the latter provides much needed headspace given the level of social media consumption in every other aspects of their lives
