I was in that race! It was deeply unpleasant. The actual bottom of our centreboard came out of the water more than once which was interesting as the boat obviously just slews off sideways for a bit until it lands again! That's Johan Molund's boat with the eagle on the main in a clip from an awesome video that was on the Hyeres website. In fact one of my all-time favourite sailing vids. It would be great if someone still had a copy saved somewhere.

In my humble opinion one of the most beautiful sights in sailing is a 470 being hammered upwind to Olympic standard in 25 knots of wind. They're really awesome boats in the big breezes.

This link will take you too the sequence of shots. The mast did survive, but, oddly enough, the kite pole didn't..........and I'd left the spare and hour and a half (each way) away. No drinks that night.

Did you glue your trapeze man to the side of the boat? Nothing seems to be able to shake him off in that sequence!

What boots is he wearing? I want some!

Hats off to you and your crew! Truly amazing sequence. Bluey's persistance on the wire is probably why the mast stayed intact. Great photography as well by the way. Where were the photos taken from? Chopper?

I've never seen a 16 as we don't have any here, however a bit of me really wants to drive one, just for the fun of being able to say "oops, sorry chaps" as you launch both your crew round the forestay as you stay locked in the toestraps at the back...

Remind me Iain to never go sailing with you!  Is that why you left the toe straps in the boat

Whilst on the subject of bent masts, although not quite as extreme as the previous one, was there ever a more perfect example of a mast which needs straightening up to match the sail?
