Too windy today Russ.
I tried to launch the 700 but a 37mph gust ripped through just as I was about to jump in and flipped the boat over. Sail down, back on the trolley and off home!!! Maybe tomorrow? |

Paul,
We decided to head over to Bowmoor in the end, the Tide time looked quite late on and we wanted as much sailing time as possible. Great sail even in only about 7 knots

Hi Russ, starts were 12:00 and 13:10 this weekend so not too bad. Yesterday was a blow out really, but today was excellent. 12-16kts for the most part.
Anyway look forward to you guys popping up at TSC in the not too distant future. |

Some great racing at Bowmoor this weekend. I got royally stuffed by Charlie Chandler in his D-one (No surprises there) Round the cans club course meant we only had two kiteable legs, but single sail reaching in a D-one is absolutely awesome. Get your ass to the back of the bus and play the main, it simply flies. Meant that on the legs that were to tight you could really get a jog on and therefore not loose out to the boats able to fly their kites. Upwind speed was good, but on a shifty gusty day was hard to keep in the groove. More practice needed and some tuning/Bimbling coming over the next few weeks...

I'm really struggling to get the kite down quickly and end up with a bit of a drag (or a lot of a drag) on every drop. How do other people do it?

Robin,
Both Charlie and I have had similar problems, but its now (only two weeks in) beocming less of an issue. I found using latex builders gloves really hlps get a decent grip as my previous Gill sailing gloves just lacked a tiny bit more grip meaning during the drop one or two of my pulls slipped, meaning the kite dropped into the water and slowed. This coupled with taking up all the slack in the halyard before blowing the cleat and devloping a hand over hand tiller extension technique seems to working, but is far from perfect. I may try a slightly thicker kite haliard so there is perhaps a little more friction in the system and getting a firmer grip is easier. I also think that the standard haliard is a bit longer then needed. I am sure Charlie will be along shortly to post his methods. I know he has tried adding purchases in the system to make the drop quicker. I actually wonder if a pump system ala RS700, Fireball or International Canoe may work?

guys, I've not sailed a D-One, but after cutting the kite tidies out of the RS100, I found it was important to tighten up sheet just before the drop to avoid oyster dredging.
It's really tempting to let the sheet go and get your head down for the halyard, but the better technique, for me anyway, was to bear away, tighten up the kite sheet so it killed the kite behind the main and then go for the halyard... fairly sure this was something I picked up off the Sten DVD, but I haven't watched it in a while. http://mustoskiff.com/dvd/index.htm |
