Marseille in August will be a driftathon in 2 knots, or if we  are lucky they may cop a Mistral.

When people say offshore they have visions of a figaro or Volvo 60, what we will have is a production boat bobbing around in the sunshine. They should permit paddling or rowing ...

What other Olympic event takes over 24 hours, requires £75k+ of kit and relies upon electronic aids?

The problem for the Finn has always been the IOC policy that weight classifications are only permitted in combat sports. Thus given the need to level up male and female numbers and find a medal for the non-sailing kite event it became a straight choice between laser and Finn or a mixed event. What irks is the way in which WS got rid of the mixed event involving the Finn, and the non-sensical choice of going offshore rather than day racing keelboats.

I seem to remember some months ago about cost of equipment for olympic events needed to be more affordable, now we are talking off shore yachting.

The mixed single-hander was nonsensical. How can an submission get on the slate when it has no description of the events it contains?

What was nonsensical was that the Finn lobby would rather jump on the bandwagon for a completely unknown format than lose their spot. They'd rather our sport look stupid than back down.

I love the Finn, but the people lobbying for it lost all credibility in my eyes with that move.

The offshore may be expensive, but at least it is a popular format already practised by a large sector of the sport. I think it might end up as a one time thing, but I'd be surprised if the french weren't prepared to foot the bill (for the games at least).

My questions going forward are:
1) what the hell is kiting doing and how will that work?
2) how will qualification work for the offshore slot, that's where the expense might really hurt?

Not sure why it needs to be so complex at all. Men's and women's equivalent events in windsurfing, Kite surfing (if we must) and singlehanded dinghy gives 6 medals. Surely just bringing in men's and women's doubleheaders gives a nice simple score card. Whether those double handers are 49ers, 470s, catamarans or offshore keelboats doesn't really matter, does it?
If there is room for another event, then making it mixed keeps the 50:50 split, and the chance for another branch of the sport to be represented.

The whole slate is a farce.

Kites are kites, not sails and should not even be considered part of our sport.

If kites wanted into the Olympics they should have lobbied for inclusion.

WS grabbing kites smacks of desperation to get some glamour on the slate.

As for offshore, let’s see how accessible that is.

Why is all the sailing water based, anyway? Pretty sure far more people go land yacht racing than kite racing world wide?
