You'd need a large venue, with plenty of water frontage and reserve parking, someone would have to contact all the classes, do risk assessments, organise wet weather cover, produce posters, ads, circulate clubs in short it could turn into quite a task, I've done it before I know what it would take, hence saying 'someone' should do it, by 'someone' I was thinking their surname might be 'else'.

Don't leave it to the clubs or punters to suggest or push it further - it is totally logical.  Most clubs would be happy to host a multi-class day ... nobody wants to look like they might not welcome the challenge do they ?  There is enough barking and froth on the forums for more than one lifetime already ... yes lets see them off the leash together.

Even the Manchester footie clubs have to appear together occasionally....  LOL

Rubbish there is no Barking on this from RS or Devoti/Suntouched...Just owners and potential owners.  In fact the two have handled the social media well in my opinion and stayed out of a bun fight.

As someone in the trade Mike its probably not best to stir hornets nests is it?

But as a multi class demo day, I think it has some merit.  It will never happen though.

"Simon (I guess the other team) sailed both boats and made a decision.  He has not been overly critical of the Zero he made his decision on the back of what was happenening at his club.  I completely get that!  I dare say if i was in his position i would do the same thing!  I dont criticise him for that decision."

I would like to point out that I have never criticised the Dzero, its maker nor its designer, in fact far from it. Ying Yang

Hi Null

I too have always found there is a great deal of mutual respect within the trade ..... coupled with  a decent level of humour and goodwill.   You would probably be surprised how just well the vast majority involved do get along together behind the scenes, and on a very civil and friendly basis.  Effective collaborations and shared interests are not alien to this sector either.

I hear what you say but even more so then  .... why not share demo-days ?  Call them 'multi-class' demos if you like.  Prospective owners would find it very useful, maybe more so than trade shows and single class demos imo.  Why should it never happen ?  What manufacturere or CA would seriously not want to be represented if invited by a club to attend one ?  The  FOM meet is often mentioned here ... it was simple to set-up, fun to attend and allowed and encouraged boat swapping.  That is but a single step from a general multi-class demo event open to all.

I raised the subject now because over the last weekend I was told of a large club that is going to do exactly this in 2015.  (No not mine btw) .  Anyway I am sure they are not alone and it would be a positive trend for dinghy racing and the sport in general imo....

For the record the classes I've been associated with in recent years have frequently shared Open events and championships with other classes - everyone really can be a winner.  Last month for example with the Finns and Europes at Northamton for our Blaze Inlands and next July at HISC with the Finns for our Nationals.  Over the years many many more single-hander classes have shared with 'us' ranging from IC's to Lasers and Solos and just about everything in between.

The thing that perhaps is worth 'stirring up' or encouraging is a bit more ... collaboration.   It makes sence.

Mike L.

Well thats a vry different subject Mike and soemthing we agree on.  Most if not all classes at some point in the future will have to let go of event exclusivity and look to share with other similar size classes.  Events like POSH etc. are testiment to this.  It seems crazy sailing clubs running multiple events through the year, when actually a concious effort to open up to a 'Open' often means a better experience for all parties.  Something we found in the D1's.  No doubt will be replicated with the Zero's

Simon, perhaps the word overly was a little unfair.  It certainly was not what I meant.  It was meant to read how you wrote it.

Like you i do not criticise the Aero as a boat or Clive.  Maybe Rs a little..... Wink

I was rather hoping that the multi-class test day thing was going to happen at SailFest (I know Mike was there with the icon, as was the D-Zero), the only difficulty being how to wedge it in to an already busy race programme.

Great concept.

In principle RS has no issue with this if it works logistically our side.

For us test sails are, generally, a route to affirm purchases and therefore we focus our good looking resource - Charlie ;-) - on these opportunities.  By that I mean clubs or groups of individuals who have pretty much already selected the boat/fleet.

Interestingly, in our experience, less than 25% of buyers actually try the boat (at least use our demo boats) before purchase. I'd wager, though I have no stats of course, that only 5% or so of Aero buyers will have tried a D0 prior to commiting. You might find these stats amazing but for the 500 odd Aero buyers so far very few of them - as we see - are debating the two boats in their mind at all.  Thats because the offerings of the boats are distinctly different in all aspects aside from their basic similarities... there's way way more factors involved in the decision process aside from the boat.

Either way, if we can accommodate an invite to something like this we certainly will. Demo Dave is older and more mature now, there's no longer need to 'lock up yer daughters and padlock the bar shutters'. Quite respectable in fact (within context)...

Jo Richards did the aero. I think you might be confusing him with Clive Everest who did the 300.
