I note that Jon Hessig sailed one at Rock a few years ago and demolished the fleet. Cant remember the PY he used but thats not really the point.

eerrrm ..  Don't think he won but was going well enough.  Is this the same Jon Hessig who romped around the Camel estuary in an ALTO during Rock week a few years back perhaps ?

Now there is an idea - add trapeze, asymetric, add a few metres of white sail while we are at it a couple of feet of extra bow and yes I suppose we could agree on a very reasonable EN of  969 as well LOL

Mike L.

PS - btw we were there that year ...

Seems odd to me that it is 'apparently' so much faster than a Tasar?

Yes, but that boat was being sailed by a hugely talented sailor with far too many years of experience - well that what he thinks any way  LOL !!!

So back on topic.....

I had the pleasure of sailing an Icon yesterday. The wind was a little up and down but average 8kts with maybe 12-13kts in the puffs.

The boat was a bit of a revelation (IMO).

Even with 2 (inept) Laser sailors in it with myself on the waggle stick we managed to give 2 Fireballs a good run for their money (and the people in the Fireballs are similar ability to myself).

Once I worked out that I was choking the main going upwind (too much kicker) we really started to shift and offwind in the gust the boat too off and the Fireballs were struggling to keep up with their kites flying.

The only leg we seemed to lose significantly on was DDW (but that could have been my helming more than anything else).

Now I am not going to say that 969 now seems a fair number but perhaps it is not all that far off (certainly based on my limited experience).....

Oh did I mention it was comfy to hike in too (no perching)......

I am paying for it today though....or that might have been the 2 Laser races that followed.

It was good, I would urge any armchair sailor to give it a go and fail to be impressed with how smooth it is and how quickly it takes off when you catch a puff (and take off is a literal term here)....

The only real issue (aside from my inept waggling of the tiller) was getting the top batten to pop over but we eventually found that a quick tug on the cunningham did the trick nicely (there is likely a better way but no amount of 'pumping' the sail would make it go across (a la Blaze).

Jeffers,
Thanks for that report. What would your all-up crew weight have been?
