Under the trolling, Grumph has a point - just how many National Champions are there out there? Maybe we should use the term Class Champion. I guess the National classes (Fireflies, Merlins etc) would have National Champions, & maybe the list of National classes could be kept current, as it seems to have gone out of favour.

I don't agree that celebrating top sailors at national level is meaningless bollox, though - it has far more relevance to the average sailor (not, notice, average Brition, who couldn't give a stuff about any of it, so should be ignored) than the Olympic stuff. I can race boat on boat with Class Champions, and even get close to being one myself, and think - just a bit more practice - loose some weight - maybe next year...

And anyway sailing has never been about 'top dogs' it's arrogant enough that silly little groups of a dozen or so wooden things sailing on a pond decide that they have produced a 'National Champion' when the population of the nation is upwards of 60 million, I always found that a little absurd, Class Champion should have been the title. Don't even start me on the European and World moniker from 60 boats most of whom are Brits.
So whoever this 'Taxi' is, it's meaningless bollox unless he gets to be in the Olympic glare, where there is at least some representation and competition that is at least testing, not I might add are they anything like as skilled as sailors of old, fit maybe, with access to nutricians, psychologists, masseurs and training regimes, but skilled sailors? Nope, sorry, nothing like the level that used to exist in the past.

Graeme, you claim to know all about sailing, but do not know Taxi!!! You are showing some big flaws in your knowledge.... Maybe Uffa Fox is a sailor more in your slightly older timeline (And I think Taxi, is getting close to Uffa, for the amount of nationals won)

Seriously... No I don't 'know' him, or even 'know of' him believe it or not stuff like that doesn't even creep onto my radar, but the term National Champion and the thought that some one who racks a few of them up should somehow be lauded above and beyond, er does and I dunno I just find it irritating.

I used to find it irritating when it was applied to my own good self many many many moons past, I know the name Steve Cockeril, I actually know Geoff Carveth who must by now be half decent he's been around long enough, but sorry, no, I don't know anyone called Taxi, so I guess you groupies will have to enlighten me and anyway if he's anything like a half decent bloke I'm sure he'd be embarrassed by the 'top dog' suggestion, is my point. That and it should be Class Champion or if it has to be, then National Class Champion and if there's a crew involved then they should equally be National Class Champions with equal status. No helm however hot can reliably win without decent crew input.

I think one of the most irritating things found in sports is the idle use of peoples nicknames, the assumption that "everybody" knows is almost universally incorrect, and leads to the impression of elitism, we don't want you because you don't happen to know somebody.

It portrays a very poor image of a sport where being in the elite group of "I know but you don’t" puts people off wanting anything to do with sailing.

I read a report on a championships recently and gave up after a few lines, it constantly used nicknames, and the casual reader would have no idea who was doing what. The total lack of empathy is quite unbelievable.

Uffa Fox is better known for many reasons, not least because we use his "real name", and before you try the impossible, stupid and quite useless task of comparing number of championships won by one over the other, please remember there were probably no more that a handful of classes at best when Uffa Fox was sailing.

PS: For the record I do know who "Taxi" is, but I've been sailing for many decades and only ever heard the name used a couple of years ago, kinda depends on if your paths cross I guess, but if I had a commercial business in the sport I was participating in, I would definatly use my full and real name and want other to do the same as inevitably less people who know this.

I completely agree, I cannot stand the constant use of nicknames, especially in reports. I do not know who 'Taxi' is, but after a quick google I see it's Andy Davis, who I have heard of. Real names are much better.
Needs to sail more...

real names should at least be used on the first instance in a report.

Agreed.

Likewise, the use of nicknames. I know of Andy Davis, but admit to no knowledge of 'Taxi'. As Alstorer says, I think it is poor form to use a nickname in the context of a general forum or report without first qualifying it.
