I do not believe they do. There are many tiny classes along the south coast that would not want to pay the affiliation fee. You can create a class as and when you like. I could be wrong but I do not believe the Rooster 8.1 class is affiliated with the RYA yet yet there are getting of for 400 or so of them out there. |

No. It's extremely common for yachts to race that aren't in a "class" at all. |

Oh yes they can. For example IRC class rules modify RRS 52 (manual power). |

So taking things to an extreme, what would happen if the Solo class, say, decided that port had right of way?

"So taking things to an extreme, what would happen if the Solo class, say, decided that port had right of way? " "Class rules may change only racing rules 42, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53 and 54." RRS 2009-2012 Port vs Starboard is rule 10, so the calss rules can't change it. The Sailing Instructions can't change it (unless you're going to race to non IYRU rules).

I've seen the threads on replica sails, but unless I've missed something there was a pretty sizeable majority pro replica? Opinion at my club is split between those, like me, who think the rule is stupid and we need to change our SI's along the lines others have suggested and those who also think the rule is stupid but we should ignore it! I can't ever recall a rule change where so many people seem to feel the need to find a way around it. |

They can't. RRS 86.1 says which rules can be changed and by whom. Parts 1, 2 and 7 can't be changed by anyone. Going back to the RS touching a mark question, AFAIK that's amended by RS standard SIs http://www.rs-association.com/docs/RS_SI_2009.doc 13.2 which amends RRS 31. SIs can change 31 but class rules can't. So the answer to the original question is no, an RS can't bump a mark in a club race even if it's an RS class race unless the club SIs are changed to allow it. Edited by Stefan Lloyd |

You were doing so well with your answer...... until you brought the 'IYRU' into it! |
