what kind of adjuster do you have Mike, mines just a tied bit of string which isn't very effective in setting jib tension can you apply rig tension, then fairly easily adjust lough tension and look at the effect on the leach, or do you have marks for different conditions that you can set before tensioning the jib? i've learned lough tension can make a huge difference with the small L3K jib that needs a fair wind strength to fully power up ... rig tension really hooks the sail |

all ive got is a bit of string but what happens is it comes out the foot of the sail as a forestay, then i tie it to the front of the boat then it goes around a piece of webbing on the jib tack and back to the boat. the second loop is what does luff tension. it is quite noticeable though.

Funny you should say that TT. First one was out at Weir Wood yesterday morning doing the race thing. Agree with what you say in general.
When the wind drops get your weight forward graemef or it'll stick like the 3000. Looked OK though, and quite quick. Looked like they had the mast a bit too raked back, but hey what do I know. We had a guess the handicap for the results and decided on 975 ish. Not a bad boat though. Couple of more arriving soon, one of which is going to a bit of a serious RS200 racer, so I reckon we'll see what the true performance is then. Suggested to the sailing sec that we have a head to head around all the cans at the club against a new Fireball and see what's what. |

The prototype's been at HISC for a while now, and I think it looks really nice. Comparisons with a 200 are appropriate because I could imagine it as a logical next step if you'd sailed a 200 and wanted to move on to a single wire boat with a bigger Assy. The 29er is a cracking boat, but has been rather taken over by the youth market: I was talking to someone a year or so ago, who looked perfect for a 29er, and asked why they didn't get one, and the reply was "because I don't want to sail against a bunch of bleeding kids!" (OK, thats a bit blunt, but I could see where they were coming from!). The 500 will appeal to anyone in that situation, and has a broader appeal as it is more stable and forgiving than the 9er, which strikes me as a boat that needs a bit more commitment to learn and master- all the youths I've known have spent the first few months capsizing and breaking masts. (This is not a criticism of the boat; if I was younger and fitter I'd get one like a shot! Just want to make the point that the 500 appeals to a different market). The thing that pleases me most about the 500 is that it's a proper race boat from LDC, bucking the trend of mass appeal rotomoulded crap that all the big manufacturers have been churning out recently. Anyway, the couples who've got them at HISC look like they've really enjoyed them! |

Been a bit busy, so missed this.
I'm still waiting for mine and can't help noticing the bloody chill in the air thats just arrived, so no doubt any day now I'll get the phone call. This time of year is really busy at work and I haven't been near the Club so not even sure if they are still racing. I'm pleased to read the stuff above. Pretty much what I thought. I saw one of those 29er things up at Grafham, and yes it was being messed about with by a couple of surprisingly helpful youffs, but it would be a death trap on our water in much the same way as that 49er would, bearing in mind as windsurfers we still like to sail in conditions that might not normally be considered for dinghy racing. So for the likes of us, I think the 500 should do the trick and it'll be up against quite well sailed RS200's, an ever increasing number of 470's the odd five oh, Lasers and a mixed bag of Supernovas, Laser 2000's 3000's a 4000 if he ever puts it back together, and an Iso. We fully expect to rule in our new craft, but if ever pride comes before a fall, I'm sure we'll be made to pay ![]() |

Yep, I have to eat my words too, it looks ok to me (although jib sheeting is a bit naff, toestrap elastics are hideous and trap wires seem far to far forwards!) but the hull looks nice and the sailplan looks good too (same as a 97 rules Cherub!) Am I right in saying it's £4900 ready to go? If so it will sell by the bucketload, I wonder if RS have introduced it thinking that demand for 200s and 400s might slow down a bit? With that size of rig however it should be a hoot in a real blow, I'll try and blag a go at some stage! |

Received the RS 500 this week and sailed it today. It's an excellent boat, handles very well. I tested laser vago, but this boat is much more responsive and faster. LDC has done an excellent job.

Well yes it IS £4995 but once you add the trailer / trolley / covers it's really £5950 and they've still not revealed the price of spares; but that's still pretty good. Did LDC ever make a BAD boat? .. out of GRP anyway. Can't wait to race one in me V3000! We've smaller sails but much less weight, so I'm determined to put up a fight. PS: Graemef: hear you sold your last boat "just in time"!! |

I can't imagine why anyone in the market for a new boat would chose a V3000 in preference to an RS500. |

Why? There is a lot to be said for sailing a boat which only weighs 50kg. Adds to the fun factor no end.
