Sorry TT but it's hard to see Laser as being better in any of those aspects than the windsurfing manufacturers. And, regardless of R&D I still think a 2 metre piece of simple CF tube shouldn't cost over £500......

Any rope. Costs absolutely nothing to make.
Sails - the material is so cheap to buy and chopping and stitching it back together and all of a sudden its worth hundreds or thousands more.

thank you for demonstrating   your utter ignorance  on the topic ...

Interesting one there Zippy. Having worked for a rope manufacturer and seen the margin that is put onto rope it is outrageous.
What highlights this is when Kingfisher import it, put their stickers on the reel and then are still much cheaper than Marlow to the chandleries. Sometimes by 50% and then the retailers double the price, add VAT and the end user pays it. Enormous mark ups.

Finn sail material is circa £100 (As quoted by a different sailmaker), the development is done by the sailors/coaches and then they sell for about £1500 and last for 1 week before they shrink!

It's amazing there aren't more millionaires in the marine industry isn't it! Clearly the margins aren't as high as you might think...

I do however agree on the rope analogy, I know how much I pay for rope buying direct from a manufacturer. BUT... there are several different stages to go though before that rope gets to your boat, each stage wanting a margin in the region of 40% to run their business.

£100 cost price product suddenly gets expensive when you apply each step at a 40% margin!

£100...£167...£278.89...£465.75
Then add VAT and you realise how quickly things get expensive.

It's why in the bike industry brands such as Canyon who are direct to consumer get so much attention, on the plus side they make access to the sport cheaper and more attainable, but at the same time are likely to kill off the local bike shop.

A Laser topmast is over 3m long.
If anyone can make 'replica' carbon top masts for a whole lot less than £500, I'm sure there is a market. I'm not aware of any on offer?
Retail is a hard business. Even when it's money for old rope, you have to shift a lot of old rope to pay the salaries, rent, bills, and to make it worthwhile.

It's easy to make a small fortune as a sail maker - start with a large one.

Exactly. Try getting a courier contract without an established business when dealing in large product...

I think the price is reasonable, it could £899 and those who want it or need it, would still pay it

The Marlow (and English Braids owner) flies down in his plane from the midlands when going to see Marlow... I heard that he owns half of Gloucester airport, but that could be just a rumor.
Controlling the manufacturing and supply to retailers the mark up is outrageous.

Of course it does- it’s called a value proposition for a reason.
