Is there a general feeling that paying more than gjw for craftinsure is worth it?    my last claim was 20 years ago!

I don't know about general but I've been fine with Craft Insure and they were the cheapest a few years ago, two fairly big claims in 9 years no problems.

I'm with craftinsure for the sole reason that they offer payment in installments and i couldn't afford the one off payment for my Finn insurance.

I have used them before and they paid out when i trashed the trailing edge of my centreboard when the boat cartwheeled over the rescue boat at a champs at chew. No issues then. Noble were good in the past but i cannot afford them. With only one claim in over 15 years i reckon it was worth going cheaper
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Moral of the story - if you smash up a boat insured my towergate dont admit fault and then you will get away scot free after 1 letter!
I am now with GJW but have thankfully never claimed.

The way that reads have to say I think that the Osprey was right. If neither of you were looking where you were going you were both at fault :)

I had an incident years ago where we were penned in unable to tack surrounded by other boats all of us on port tack and a starboard tacker literally sailed straight through the side of us (3 foot by 1 foot hole) having had every opportunity to take avoiding action.

I was not happy when my insurer (Cant remember who it was) didn't pursue the other party.

I think things are a bit better now, but the point is that right of way does not exonerate you from causing damage.

I thought the answer in these sort of cases was to sort it out in a protest and then send the results to your insurance company.

My club has no protest procedure, other party would have to admit liability.

I've been with Towergate for the last 5/6 years with pretty much the same premium each year. For some strange reason today I received a quote for renewal which is due in a couple of weeks and the premium has doubled! I rang them and they didnt seem to care at all that I'd had a quote from GJW for 40% less than them. Nobles price was even more expensive that the doubled quote from Towergate.

So GJW it is then.

The rules of Part 2 apply between boats that are sailing in or near
the racing area and intend to race, are racing, or have been racing.
However, a boat not racing shall not be penalized for breaking one
of these rules, except rule 14 when the incident resulted in injury or
serious damage, or rule 24.1

How crazy. It's supposed to be a self-policing sport.

Anyway, RYA prescription:

67 Damages
1.  Any issue of liability or claim for damages arising from an incident while a boat is bound  by The  Racing  Rules  of  Sailing shall  be  subject  to  the  jurisdiction  of  the courts and not considered by a protest committee.
2. A boat that takes a penalty or retires does not thereby admit liability for damages or that she has broken a rule.

How insurance companies sort it out between themselves is very foggy indeed. Yes, there's the whole Endeavour vs Juno stuff, but what they actually do to determine liabilities seems very opaque.
