I was thinking that adding a back rest would be the first improvement. Why limit the support to just the bum? Or is this just because I have no decent stomach muscles? |

Actually....thinking about that back rest idea. How about a boat for those of us more advanced in years with a sprung back rest that would go back when pressure was applied but mechanically assist when coming back in. My body is reluctant to move from a laying position to sitting without much shuffling, hence I can achieve no more than an 'elegant lean'.

It could also be an effective way of restricting how far people could sit out which might have advantages for keeping things sane. Edited by JimC - 10 Jun 16 at 10:52am |

A back rest sounds great! With a cushion?

I know, soon gets silly doesn't it. But a back rest as a limit for how far out people can hike might be the best way to limit the amount of knee destruction sailors do and make for a healthier sport... There are few ideas so stupid that they have no advantages at all!

The back rest might also end up limiting how far out the boom would go, unless the boom was very high, or the back rest so low as to be useless? |

You could experiment by bunging a couple of plastic chairs on a plank and sticking them on a high boomed singlehander. Maybe take the wings off a blaze for a bit?
