I got it right in the calculation

Point is that it is significantly more than comparable clubs. The boatpark land is unlikely to useable (under Local Plan etc rules) for much else, depressing its value compared to developable land in towns.

I am horrified at some of these costs. My Old Farts Membership costs me £100 if I get discount for two work parties. This includes a berthing fee and £50 to the Canal and Waterways Trust, British Waterways that was. They own the water but we own the club and land. It costs my son more money to play hockey in winter than to sail in summer.

So the director was appointed to the board of LAKE VIEW LODGES LTD,  LEISURE & TOURISM DEVELOPMENTS PLC, CV HOTELS LTD, CV RESORTS LTD in January and  INTERNATIONAL RESORTS GROUP PLC  in March!   He also has a number of other interesting directorships including  BEWL WATER FISHING LIMITED.

Simple really as he can, potentially, rake it in with the other interests with the sailing club out of the way!  Shame that the club can't put a business plan together that shows him a good profit as a result of keeping a sailing club on site!

Such a shame to see any club failing but especially one with so much history.

Not sure if we're talking about the same bloke but a director of some of those companies is also involved with "Bewl Holiday Homes LLP"

I live down the road and as far as I'm aware apart from the odd cottage there are no holiday homes there....yet.

Didn't something similar happen to Melton Mowbray SC

Edit:
A director of "Bewl Holiday Homes LLP" is also a director of "Kent Attractions LLP" this company owns "Bewl Water Boating" the current Landlord of BVSC

I wonder what a recent Volvo winning skipper would have to say? I recollect sailing at bewl several times when Ian was competing there in his youth days..

I have been reading this thread with interest as for many years i have been astounded by peoples perception that sailing club membership and open meeting entry fees are expensive Compared with the cost of a round of golf, the rental of a tennis court, the membership of a gym or pretty much any other sport you care to mention we pay nothing. Consequently most clubs struggle to make ends meet and can only offer sub standard facilities which bizarrely we for the best part seem happy to accept . now David Sullivan is a pretty smart guy and I'm pretty sure that his rental is based upon a calculation which more accurately reflects the value of membership . I think a reassessment of sailing club membership and entry fees is long overdue : maybe then they can offer facilities that would entice us to spend more time there. Its a system that works very well in the US where clubs often have pools, gyms and tennis courts .Sure clubs would lose a percentage of members who are unwilling to pay increased costs but I'm also certain it would entice a lot of new customers who don't want to spend their weekend in a soulless, dingy clubhouse

And it would be so enticing for young sailors struggling to find their feet in life, and wouldn't at all affect the image of sailing as an elitist rich man's sport!

It's ridiculous views like limey's this are killing sailing clubs. Keep it simple and keep it manageable and encourage involvement and a nice family atmosphere.

If you offer too much, you quickly get factions fighting which is divisive and tears clubs apart.

Ultimately it will be the small friendly clubs who own their own land that will survive.

Think your wrong there limey. Make the cost of membership too high and you'd kill the sport.......I don't like swimming or tennis either, I'd resent subsidising those things with my fees. Of course this is just my perception and as we all know, individual perceptions do not always reflect reality.

The difference between the sports that Limey mentions and sailing is that there is a personal investment of £Ks in sailing on top of membership (yes, I know that golf bats and tennis snowshoes could cost a lot, but even a basic boat is a thousand or so).
Upkeep of a golf course and an appropriate clubhouse is expensive, and members expect paid professional staff.
Sailing clubs are generally cramped, damp, ramshackle changing rooms with a decrepit galley manned by volunteers

This is why sailing membership should be cheaper.
