Its a place to go and meet friends from classes you don't sail any more, look at boats that you can't afford and couldn't sail anyway, but look really cool - and discuss them with enthusiastic owners who love their class and are happy to chat with no sale in the offing - just because they like talking boats. Even the commercial stands are happy to chat - it is more about long term image, I think, than sales on the day.

The defunct Europe with no UK builder will have a stand at the Dinghy Show.  Three out at Hunts last Sunday enjoying good racing in their excellent value for money boats.

I'm sure she will be along to tell you herself, but 'Er Indoors chose the Lightning after being persuaded into it at the Dinghy Show.
the same, but different...

I'll remember to add it back on the annual bucket list when I've retired... until then a day dedicated for sailing that doesn't result in any sailing...  Confused

2 days for me and my son, one day spent in London and one at the show for wife and daughter. Seems to work pretty well.

The years I've not enjoyed it have been when I've just been a visitor, with no stand to be on, and haven't bumped into many people I know. Its OK just wandering round looking at the boats, but there have been years when in 2 days I've not made it all the way round, due to time spent with other sailors. Those are the good years.

The byte has to compete against many small singlehanders, most of which are older designs, so age would appear to have little to do with any of it. I think the problem it has is that the new rig is very nice and all that, but it cost pretty much the same again as buying a 2nd hand boat to upgrade.

Perhaps you hit the nail on the head there Rupert. There are loads of cheap traditional Bytes out there and the majority of the boats racing are conversions. A rights holder can sell rigs but not complete boats.

What makes the C2 Byte special is the rig at seven or eight years old, not the hulls at 30 ish. Most boats are conversions and many carry ex Worlds or European rigs.

Well done to the Europe chaps. They must be running on pure enthusiasim...which is commendable.

I have the greatest admiration for the Lightning. As a boat and as a class. They have a small enthusiastic builder in John Claridge and a great Association. They seem to relish being a national class and I am sure they have no trouble finding stand manners, pun?

I did the Tasar stand a few times and enjoyed it. I will be there this year wandering.
