A clear case that clubs should ban boats that don't have retracting centreboards, or at the very least make owners sign a disclaimer.

They do sign a disclaimer when they sign onto a race!

Some might regard it as a bit harsh to ban all keelboats you know...

Sorry chaps fair bit o pish being spouted here , on my planet centreboards by definition retract ;)

the sailor of the borrowed boat would have been patently aware of the draft of borrowed boat after all he had to stick the centreboard down before sailing anyway .and if a modern f18 would have been shocked by the size of it !!!!!

What difference would retiring make to his centreboard being stuck down and getting ashore , hes got a problem either way !!!!!

I would expect if sailing at an open meeting , as a visitor i would be alerted to local dangers , if they werent blatently obvious , which in a sandy estuary is a case of fingers crossed lookout .
But you would expect a laid start line to be in navigable water , similarily any laid marks , otherwise well warned.

I would be peeved if not warned and not obvious , and most likely seek redress if any damage stopped me racing or affected my position, insurance company would have their view on liabilities but i wouldnt personally persue a volunteer making a mistake .

Trouble is if you might have paid >£100 entry fee its hard to feel its a volunteer you have an issue with.

That's very true.
Some clubs seem to turn into money-grabbing machines at the sight of a few visitors.
They are charging handsomely for a service, they need to deliver that service to a proper standard.
The fact that they are using volunteers to do their work does not diminish the club's responsibility.
I say this as one who has done a fair amount of race-ociffering, as a volunteer.
Although if you are doing your 'duty' in a club, it's not like you've volunteered on a fully charitable basis, it's part of the deal with your subs.

That would be a bargain. Imagine the cost if all the volunteers wanted paying.

Yip I get that. You don't need someone to point out that it'll be shallow there because there are people stood on the beach!  BUT if the line was laid with a committee boat and pin as implied then it is much more reasonable to expect the full length of the line is deep enough.

Don't think the bent mast is the same thing at all.  I've never bent a mast sailing my boat wit the mast pointing to the sky...  If the start line was under a bridge I'd have grounds to complain if that bent my mast.
