Topic: 420 winged rudder Posted: 31 Jan 13 at 10:25pm |
"To question the honesty of a young person" no one did this though. They just asked what advantage wings would give (if they had been fitted)

''The real issue should not be the one of mistaken identity but that of trialing a different rig with out approval''
Assuming that the 420 did have a t foil rudder, which was what everyone knew to the best of their knowledge up til about pg14 of this thread, everyone asking questions about it's right to sail, and dispensation/allocation of handicap was, at least in my opinion, at liberty to do so. otherwise, in the hypothetical situation that a 420 had been sailing with wings, where do people voice their opinions and whatnot?
I also see no reason why the RS was more of a pressing issue than the 420, up until the point when it was revealed that the 420 was in fact, a national 12... As an ex topper squad sailor, i have always expected to be treated just the same as any other sailor at an event.
As it is, it was just a case of boat mis-identification.

I have no objection to supportive parents. I am still one even though I am no longer needed, but I do object to kids being sold a dream of Olympic glory which will probably never be attained. I know parents who were sucked into this conspiracy only to emerge with scale free eyes and a 29er rotting behind the shed. There must be a better way of encouraging youth participation without mis representation.

Hi Mike I thought I would support you in this. To question the honesty of a young person and then to have your facts wrong is inexcusable. Why has there not been an apology to the young sailors. How someone spends their time and money should not a concern. Had my daughter been less interest in other forms of sport, which her mother drove her around the country to do. I would have been more than willing l to have brought her a suitable boat and transported her and it. We have a family in the sailing club that I belong to that has a daugther in the Topper Squad and a son in the National Laser Squad with a second son just starting in the 29 er's. These parents have given up their own social lives and have had to do with out to ensure that their children are doing what they enjoy. I can only raise my hats to them. The real issue should not be the one of mistaken identity but that of trialing a different rig with out approval. How ever because it's a commercial company very little has been said about it. Glad to see that your boys are doing well. Piggys brother.

I think Mike's tone has been good humoured and well mannered, and I couldn't blame him if he was a bit miffed by some of the comments. |

I think Mike should learn to let his kids have their own voice ...

Possibly the case but the same applies, most kids are not slow at point out to their parents when to shut up ...
