I watch almost as much YouTube as normal TV, watched nearly all Star racing last year and will watch it again this year and take part in the chat that goes with it, I think there were others on here who did the same, can't see a problem with it for myself or sailing.

That's not a young audience. Its mixture of people watching a travel documentary with a bit of personal drama thrown in, and half men clicking on thumbnails of women in bikinis. There may be a very small audience crossover who like seeing a bit of sailing adventures type stuff between those who watch sailing vlogs and possible Olympic offshore. I do think there is a big audience out there mostly of those who follow offshore trackers and do the virtual offshore races themselves. Add to that the fact that it will be the only sport constantly on I think it will be good for engagement. Edited by mozzy - 05 Nov 18 at 9:34am |

Exactly. As to kite racing I doubt many kiters are even remotely interested in the Olympics nor I recall were snowboarders when their turn came, I don't recall even when BMX got the call, but if there is one bell weather as to the sort of audience all these sports need and that is the disinterested Eastenders (Neighbours down under)watching morons like my Mrs, (don't worry she doesn't read this forum either) she picked up on BMX then watched it avidly, then pointed it out to all the girls. Not that anything came of it, but possibly up and down the country others did take it up. So in one instance it works. So what is it we'd all like from the Olympics? Increased participation? Then maybe cross over? Well it took a while, but lots of windsurfers eventually crossed over into dinghies, myself included. Kiting is a lot more accessible than Finn sailing, who knows maybe tomorrows kitefoil racers will age, get fat and fall into a Finn or some other lead mine, maybe they'll even stay fit and agile enough to ride a Farr, and troll dinghy forums you never know. ![]() Edited by iGRF - 05 Nov 18 at 10:10am |

I take it WS are planning on reducing the number of nations that can compete in this area to rich nations only. No one is going to be able to fund this boat and a campaign other than rich national associations. Any ideas on what and offshore sail wardrobe test programme looks like of if it is one design buying three suits of sails and picking the best set. Utterly ridiculous decision.

I'm pretty sure the equipment will end up being SMOD, supplied equipment for the games, and possibly even embargoed so that no one can get access to the specific games boats for unlimited training, optimisation, etc.
There will still be advantages for the big sailing nations, but no more so than in the Finn (or any other Olympic class in recent times, probably ever) Qualification is another question, but I'm sure a plan will emerge... |

Yes embargoing might work. But I wonder what the minimum training time to be safe will be. |

There will be no SMODs at Paris 2014.
As a result (probably) of the EU investigation, the documentation from the AGM showed that WS will enter in to negotiations by Q1 2020 with the License holders for Laser, 49er, N17 and RS;X to open up building to multiple manufacturers. All new equipment will manufactured by multiple license holders. Bearing in mind the $millions Laser have just spent on protecting their IP, how do you think that is going to go? |

The mixed offshore event will never happen - how many emerging nations will be able to afford it.
Will any non-sailors follow some dots on a screen pottering around off the coast ?. To make it in any way interesting would cost an absolute fortune (on board cameras etc etc etc). On one hand WS seem to want 'X Games' type sailing and then they suggest some offshore debacle ? When you watch the Stars now you realise what the Olympics has lost - best sailors in amazing boats. Of all the sailors I know I know none who really follow the skiffs, Nacras, boards etc in the Olympics. The Laser even drags in more intertest. If the Finn really goes that will probably be the end of interest for many serious sailors. We have lost the FD, Soling, Star and now maybe the Finn - many of the best small boat sailors in history have come from those classes. What options are there now for them ? There will be a move away from the Olympics as a serious event. |

Could be worse, rugby is bust, cricket is practically bust and so changing the very fundamentals of the game, boxing is a farce, cycling is totally discredited, football is corrupt. World Sailing is making a grab for all aspects of the sport - but at club level life will potter along unaffected.
