A completely undeucated guess would be that it was intended to reduce the bow burying.

Or maybe to improve the inter-action between the two rigs. The upper wing of bi-planes is often set forward of the lower one.

More or less... Reason given was to reduce the interference between the 2 rigs.

Hmmm, it almost looks like that lot is actually stable where it is, it clearly has'nt just happened half a second earlier. 

So how the hell is that guy going to get down off there!  He's stood on the trailing edge of a foil, about 1mm wide, and has a nice expanse of near vertical polished gelcoat to negotiate on the way down. yikes!

Ah, forgot to mention, it´s quite shallow there, mostly 3 or even less meters  ..so it is indeed stable
