I think I need a long rest after all of this.
You could go out of class and stick a D One rig in there with some moderate bodging ![]() |

Thanks Dan,
I can certainly see your point with the cuningham and outhaul that don't require huge effort to pull on, but its when the boat needs that last inch of kicker I'd be might prefer a single middle swivel. I keep imagining what a Laser kicker would be like if was fixed in the middle, but then you spars are considerably improved so I expect the loads are less... erm, agricultural than that. Looking forward to updating my expectations of simple single handers. |

Yes, but where would the kite go ![]() So, would the boat be competitive at 90kg and would it support 94kg ![]()

Yep this boat is far far less kicker intensive than the laser. Plenty of cunno will help in breeze though, but not in anything above 7kts! The vang camcleat is the centre cleat and is a great improvement over the swivelblock with cleat on the proto.

Thankfully not been on this thread for a while due to extended holiday and general apathy. Gotta love some D-Zero experts who haven't bothered to have a sail of the prototype / production boat yet dare to highlight the "faults" of the design right here. I guess there's one in every sailing club, always has been. Surprised that Dan even bothers to respond, I'm dying of boredom.....

I have central cleats on the Lightning. Most of the time they are fine, sometimes they are awkward. Same can be said for cleats on the side deck.

Hi Dan
Most Phantoms seem to have them like your behind the mast and we have free layout. I certainly find mine easy enough with the tails led back. Gordon 1277 now sold. |

I agree Rupert. But my favourite set up for ease of use is the Phantom (like Gordon just said) the cleats are all mounted behind the mast, you also pull the rope primary line from about a metre behind the cleat so the angle is less critical (looks similar to the Zero) Whilst i had always thought side deck cleats to be superior, i just don't think they are. I often find i am sat on them, or if not too close to get a good mechanical advantage, in classes where continuous lines are either outlawed or you are not able to splice the lines together you find you run out of control line, or even worse the other side is not cleated in. The more and more i think about it the more i believe in the KISS theory.

It always amazes me the antediluvian control features still prevalent on boats in the 21st century, you'd think by now they'd be push button operated and from a central console, in fact there should be an app on your phone. All that pulling bits of string, breaking nails, getting rope wrapped around your legs, the one thing the Punk had that improved the situation they seem to be doing away with because it's felt you girls couldn't handle the extra friction.
A good boat ruined for limp wrists and lard boys I reckon.. |
