Same for any boat, certainly skiffs, guess it's to do with the speed of the wind hitting the sails.  At low speed, the pressure is higher which means the boat is heavy on the tiller and wallows, any change in direction in the wind means the boat reacts more than if it was moving at a higher speed.

Not very well explained and probably wrong - what does everyone else think?

Having the kite up may seem to make things easier, though that doesnt neccessarily make it safer.  Take some 2005 800 results for example - The eastbourne open, the guy who won was the guy who didnt fly his kite.  And the one windy day at the nationals, the guys who got 1st and 2nd on that day were again the guys who used their kite the least.
I know some of you will be just twitching to say, well thats just bad boat handling and maybe it was but really.....bad boat handling from steve irish??  I dont think so, and he wasnt the guy getting the top results in those ive just mentioned.

With the kite up the boat is driving harder so it doesn't bob up and down on the waves so much as go through them. Of course, on the points of sail that you can use spinnaker you are going with the waves and so the boat feels great.

The 420 pic reminds me of the Texel video from 2005. Here's a pic

Just who possibly thinks to put a sailing club on a beach where there are rolling waves!!  I want the racing to be challenging, but i would like to make it to the race course without the risk of breaking anything.

Every cat sailor should sail the Round Texel before they die. Preferably not just before they die. Or die in the process.

It's a Le Mans style start along a mile long beach. It's not always that rough.

People who want to sail on the sea, (as IMO it's more fun than inland) and have no convenient shelter to launch from nearby.

we launch into a harbour at hill head but the worst bit is often just outside as in a southwesterly the waves bounce off the wall infront of the club and suddenly become twice as high
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.
