But that's in New Zealand... The people building them now watched their fathers, even grandfathers building light boats. That's a whole culture that hardly existed over here. I have a 1951 Kiwi photo in front of me of a guy balancing a *clinker* boat of at least 12feet long on his head... |

I am waiting for some SK78max to come as I need to replace my intermediate shrouds due to the starboard one being half severed. So the mast is at home. Awaiting the grinder and epoxy. I was going to loan the boat to Jeremy. Because I'm Landyachting on Sunday. But I'm not sure he was happy to take it out if the intermediates were likely to break? Not that the mast would fall down. So unlikely. Sorry.

Ordered a set of plans today I figured that I needed to make a commitment and shell out some cash, so I'll have to actually build one now.
Don't hold your breath though, gotta finish a few other jobs then build a shed for it first.
I'd really like to join up with others to get some bulk/joint materials purchases.
First priority laser cut ply etc
Later (much later) mast, foils and sails
Surely we must be able to find UK mast and sail makers who could supply more economically than importing from NZ ?

Depends how currency rates go. Last time I got a rig from the long white cloud is was pretty competitive. But the NZ stuff is *very* good too. If you get a stick from C-tech and a rag from Fyfe they're coming from folks who work together all the time and match sails to spars amazingly well. Edited by JimC - 20 Jan 12 at 10:31pm |

The mast will be easy to come by, and what I would hope to do is just get Norths NZ to send the files to North UK who would be able to make an identical North Sail to the NZ ones.

Congratulations! Let us know how it goes and when you start up. Where are you based? If somebody started building close by it would encourage me to start up too.

Sorry I haven't sent you the contacts for people looking to build. I have been gathering them again after losing them due to having to clean build my email client. Due to Nigerian gangster types. Jim knows what I mean! But - Bootscooter (forum name) is looking to start building soon, but I believe he is flying in the desert at the moment. Hughph A couple o guys from the Uk Cherub fleet ( currently looking for space to build ) And another who's keen but due to weddings, houses etc it won't be for a while. A guy from Norfolk Punt Club And JeremyC from my club is keen And a friend of mine over in Essex ( he'd like a Fyne boat kit style option ) 8 optimistically, but once people start to build more normally take up the challenge. Just need to get everyone togethere and have a build weekend! Sorry forgot you - 9 Actually come to mention it... Ruscoe (on here) mentioned he might build as well. So theat could be 10! Jack,
Can't remember saying that but i am interested in a project however no one seems to of answered the crew weight question. If they are only £1500 to build then fantastic, but i suspect i am well over the maximum crew weight.

I would be very interested in building, but I haven't got the money to, so if there is anyone close by (West Mdilands) I would gladly help you build yours, if you want a hand.

.. I'm sure wooden boats can be very good, and far more environmentally sound as well.
My reason for buying resin & fibre boats is merely laziness; many many years ago, we had a wooden topped enterprise and the annual rubbing down and revarnishing was a pain in the butt. In our boat park are numerous abandoned and ill maintained boats, the GRP ones could be scrubbed up and sailed, the wooden ones won't even make firewood (too damp). I can repair plastic pretty well (and almost invisibly too) ... how did the trap hook hole damage to the wooden 3.7 go? Post repair pictures? Even the solo sailors .. furniture lovers to a man.. are now buying "plastic" boats. PS: delicate boats and trap hooks .... tried a Waddington Flush Hook? Mine is a boat saver! PPS: yes hartleys have been "old and heavy" class builders to date .. but check out the new epoxy Supernova (and they built a carbon cherub once .. tho nobody bought one). Aadvark (or bloodaxe) 3.7s would be good .. but would anyone afford one?
