haha... the google story is interesting... 'jackets and ties in the yacht club bar' mentality got a rude awakening then.

back in the good ol' days:

Perhaps these dinghies were more marketable because they were made of wood?
After all people don't buy much plastic furniture do they?

..... but no one in their right mind would take a wooden sideboard, better featured on the 'Antiques road show'  on the water racing !   ... Oh silly me yes they do ...  Brass fittings, alloy masts, cotton sails, blow up bags and all ...

it wasn't so much that they were made of wood, it was more that they were made of wood at home.  DIY boat building was massive back then.
the same, but different...

More people racing vintage Merlins than Altos....
X-boats with their wooden masts seem to keep racing.

It isn't all about racing, to some people a wooden boat is a nice thing to own.

I don't think comparing the sport with the boom of the 60's is very hepful, everything was different then.

... what have Alto's got to do with it ... ??

Even 400's are made out of polyester come to think of it and just maybe there are more racing than those venerable sailing sideboards me thinks ... you are beginning to take it far far  too seriously there 400 !

PS ... As for 'X' boats ..  great of course but a heck of a lot of money.  I like 1940's MG's ... but you can't expect many to run them today.

That's part of the problem, not the solution to it, a class of alcoholics dwelling in the past, breaking the £8000 bar record drinking 'dark and stormy's' down in Kingsbridge once a year using sailing as an excuse, what's that got to do with the future popularity of sailing dinghies?

X boat and similar keelboats are actually not too expensive to race.
A lot of the boats split the cost among two or three people.
Maintenance costs, but the boats hold their value if you buy carefully.

It's possibly part of your problem.
You don't understand many of the people who currently sail dinghies.
That's probably a  barrier to getting others to join us.
