A lot of the submissions had the upping of mixed classes from just the Nacra to the 470 and a keelboat too. The mixed windsurf and mixed single handers don't increase medal count, improve gender equality and also don't create events where men and women compete alongside each other. So tick a lot of boxes... except no one knew how mixed singe handed events work! Most likely however, was that the mixed single hander was the only option which allowed kitesurfing in, kept the finn and kept the 470 (albeit as a mixed class). So it was probably the only option that the lobby groups could agree on. It's a shame that those involved would rather have unknown potentially unworkable events than see their equipment dropped.

Mixed two person dinghy without selection trials looks quite dodgy ... shouldn’t the 470 be trailed against the 505 and Fireball, which also have a history of successful female participation without positive discrimination?
I also look forward to seeing the men and women’s 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays being dumbed down to become mixed events ...

Sorry to rain on your parade but Athletics has already had mixed relay teams. They were at Doha World Champs this year and will make their Olympic debut in Tokyo......

I bet athletics isn’t getting hung up on staggering the starts in the Heptathlon 800m to ensure the first across the line gets gold.
TV viewers seem to cope fine with it as it is. |

And in a similar vein, I don't see The F1 GPs having a 'double-points' spectacular in the final race of the year - strangely, tv viewers seem to be able to understand the concept that Hamilton may have done enough thoughout the races so far in the series to have won it before the end of the season by only coming 7th or better at Mexico...

No, but each F1 race is televised and watched by millions. Sailing doesn’t get that kind of air time -if producers only want to film one race properly they don’t want it to be a dead duck.

No, but F1 did abandon having discards because it was too hard for the punters to grasp... |

So more information coming through:
World council puts in proposal to replace Mixed Single-Hander with Offshore Mixed Keelboat. Description of mixed double handers is basically a description of the 470. Then we get told the format for the mixed kiteboading will be: "Various options, including Short Track Relay on a short windward/leeward course, with team members (male and female) covering laps alternating, with a changeover zone. Competition may consist of an opening series in heats and a knockout stage including winner takes all final or other form of final (i.e. best of x race wins). Proposed target time 10 minutes for 4 laps, each team member covers 2 laps with a total of 3 changeovers." Funboard association submit for a foiling windsurf to replace the RS:X. Format would be slalom then course racing in light winds. Musto Skiff Class Association propose Musto like critera is adopted for the mixed single hander selection. No info on how they would envisage the format to work. I guess they had to put themselves forward as a new submission as they didn't meet the selection criteria set out by WS for the ongoing boat trials. Elsewhere it is reaffirmed that Dzero, Melges 14, Laser and Aero are going t equipment trials for single hander. So, to sum up we have WS board wanting to replace the mixed single-hander with offshore short handed sailing. We have a maker of foiling windsurfs wanting to have foiling windsurfs. And we have the Musto Skiffs wanting the selection criteria for the mixed single-hander to allow Musto consideration. What we still don't have is any credible explanation on the format of the mixed single-hander...surely that should dictate the equipment criteria? And we don't have an update on what classes applied for evaluation for the mixed single-hander. |

At what
point do the sport reject the attempts by the IOC / WS to modify sailing itself
to fit 'other' objectives .. you know the ones that follow the inevitable gravy
train. If the
Olympics are to be considered any sort of worthwhile pinnacle for sailing in
the longer term should it not reflect sailing as more widely practiced by the
hundreds of thousands or millions who actually make up the sport ?? .... maybe 'nice' to be involved but should it even be there ?? Many
sports do not revere the Olympics to the same extent and yet still get by very
well indeed - even if several have some sort of peripheral direct involvement in
the 5-ringed circus. Increasingly sailing looks like a round peg being rammed into the square hole presented to it. The sports disproportionate focus on just one pinnacle competition, partly out of control of the sport itself, is the problem and the challenge. Fiddling about with classes, racing formats, the implicit fear of being 'dropped' etc etc are just the symptoms. Edited by Cirrus - 01 Nov 18 at 11:16am |
