Aha, the old wind strength over-estimation chestnut once again!

For the record, 35 knots is a ludicrous amount of wind. Olympic 470 sailors stop putting their kites up around the 28-30 knot mark, and they're full-time professional athletes.

18-20 knots of breeze would be my best guess of the wind strength in those photos, I'd say.

Sorry, I chose the pics where the sailing looks good rather than where it looks stupidly windy. Scooby, what was it you were saying about driven spray?

I think the wind was peaking at 35knots rather than being a constant 35knots. Also it's on Sydney Harbour, where I believe the water is generally flat(ter).

Yep 35 knots gusts on Sydney Harbour can be typical of a West to Southerly breeze that averages 18 to 25 knots.  A few weeks ago we recorded 48 knots on SH with a highest average of about 35 knots.  Water would not likely indicate this kind of breeze either as the Harbour is quiet sheltered

The weekend before saw a peak gust of 43 knots with a highest average of 31 knots.  See below

It looks like the Lane Cove fleet. You can see Drummoyne SC in the background of one of the photos. VERY sheltered, an arse of a place unless it's windy. Being a W/SW'er there would've been some sailable bits then some scary bits.

As a bloke I know said "The only good thing to come from the West is John Wayne".

Appologies to those on the other side of the continent as it's the other way around.
