New Olympic events.

Eleventh hour changes have a nasty habbit of getting through, without proper consultation.

I lightwind two person 10m+ keelboat event (Figaros?) is hardly media friendly, or athletic, or accessible, or affordable ... if WS go with this it will be a nail in Sailing as an Olympic sport.

Whilst some of you will say that the demise of sailing as an Olympic event may be a jolly good thing, I subscribe to the view that it the past it has helped to sustain the sport and industry, and should go on to do this, subject to the inteligence of World Sailing.

It's a mixed offshore keel boat. None foiling. Two person so shorthanded. I think the idea initially floated would be something like the figaro is now. 

In many ways I like the idea. I think the shorter races closer to shore does little for viewership (for the lay person). The way to get more viewers is to improve the media technology. I think most people are likely to watch sailing because it seems adventurous and they want that escapism of being taken away from shore. 

Offshore sailing wouldn't fit in to TV scheduling, but then, it wouldn't need dedicated slots. It would take 5-10 seconds for live studio presenter to give updates on offshore progress, then clips of the day action from on-board each evening. 

But, and it's a massive but... there is no world cup series for qualification / ranking and it's hard to see how they would fit in with a global series. Plus, I know equipment is small fry when summing up the costs of an Olympic campaign, but once you're taking offshore yachts it becomes pretty significant barrier to participation. 

Finally, the showcase of a host City's coastline could be great, but covering such a huge are does pose a security risk that the IOC may not be willing to accept. 

Is athletics proposing mixed shot-putt or running? No, because it's a fatuous idea. Or swimming proposing mixed single-person events? (Mixed relays or medleys might work.) 

In sailing, what the heck is wrong with a mixed two-person crew? Ticks the gender box.
