It would be easier if the Radial said RADIAL in big letter across it. The 4.7 does have it written on, doesn't it?

They are? Not that I've noticed. and even worse if there are fake sails in the mix. |

Most Radial sails have a blue head and clew (even the replicas) and are a different cut. A 4.7 has 4.7 written on it plus a large amount of boom sticking out the end. This will of course become a little different when (if) the new Standard sail ever gets released...... If the helm has not signed on stating their rig choice and you genuinely cannot tell the difference then score them as a full rig and let them come to you.

Possibly even at the level of PY/rig switching. I wonder if one reason why Lasers never win handicap races at WSC is because of the PY distortion due to rig-switching nationally.

The reason Lasers never win handicap races is because they are 'all-rounders' - they general do ok but get bashed in the light by some classes and also get bashed by others when its windy.
Unlike most classes they never seem to be the 'dog that has its day' The closest to an ideal Laser day must be a Radial in big breeze ? |

I would agree on all of the above.

Yes, that sounds likely.
Do you think the Aero will be like that too? I guess any hiker aimed at planing performance will be in the same position - the Tasar is the classic example.

No sure
The Finn, Phantom and RS 300 can certainly have their day ? The Laser (and Tasar as you mention) just don't have ideal courses/conditions. There's a lot of nonsense talked about both being great handicap boats and especially about the Tasar. Perhaps the Aero will have days/courses that suit it ideally - its quick planing/light hull combo may suit puffy inland conditions or [perhaps sit will plane off into the distance on tight puffy reaches ? I think it has more potential for those days than the Laser but perhaps the Laser will remain better all rounder ? |

i wonder how true that is rich96? absolutely a laser does just perform to its level all of the time seemingly. If a laser was the "all rounder" would they, if all things were equal (entry participation, complete forum wind range), win most handicap series? Does any one have experience of this, if so do we know why, is it because py data is skewed due to rig switching?

420's and Fireballs are fantastic performers on the water .. and on handicap ... in suitable conditons. Well known and recognised for many a year - they both like a good blow ! Some classes 'moment' is in lighter conditons. But a number of classes are respectable 'all rounders' across the wind range.
Lasers, imo, fall into this last category and across a long series can still do well with consistent 'respectable' results in all wind speeds. However on a specific day they are likely to be beaton by the 'specialists' at either end of the sailing wind spectrum. So on a one race/one day event like the QMSC 'Bloody Mary' are unlikely to win ..... Mike L. Edited by blaze720 - 08 Nov 14 at 2:33pm |
