This link is to a video of a test the 49er class has done in race courses, the course is restricted in its width along the entire length of the course.

Another test is due to start in Perth Australia on 14th November

It must change tactics completely though...if you decided you needed to sail someone down the fleet your much more restricted surely...they get to the edge of the course and call water.

Just hoping the main council can take on some of the equipment commitee's recommendations without taking them all, i.e. it's not an all or nothing decision.

Reason being that I can see re-introduction of the multi instead of match-racing being popular all round, more nations will have more chance of winning a medal this way.  I see this as a "Star out, Multi in" decision, which leaves the more thorny, and I beleive, despite the excellent track record the Star class has, far less likely-to-get-through-council decision being the proposal surrounding the 470 events.

I can't see even GBR or AUS backing the dropping of the womens and mens 470 in favour of a mixed 470 and a womens skiff, and seriously doubt there'll be much support from other nations for the skiff in particular.

Just hearing that Council have voted and approved the recommendations from the Events Committee. So thats a slate of events for 2016 with equipment selected in 2012.

How come there are classes specified against some events?  I thought last time around there was a big thing about picking "events" not "classes" at this stage?

I also notice that the Laser is the "Men's singlehander" and the Finn is referred to as "Men's 2nd singlehander" not "Heavyweight singlehander".  With no apparent difference between these events, what is the official  justification for having them both?  To the outside world (and the IOC) that just looks like a repeated and wasted slot.

Similarly why do only women get a keelboat?  Why is this event not mixed or open, or balanced by a gents equivalent.  In fact, doesn't the Finn have a steel centreplate? You could call that the Men's keelboat - at least that would give a consistant set of events.

Out of interest, how do they define "skiff"?  Its been debated long and hard on forums with no definitive answer.  Whilst clearly it isn't one, if the 470 class put themselves forward for the Women's Skiff, there is no means of saying its not eligable.  Without a definition, any boat could claim to be a skiff - even a Star!

well technically the Tornado is a dinghy and that was argued out by the men in suits last time. Im not sure as to the reasons why some classes were listed this time, but I think its in line with the last mis years when they stated that they wanted to give long campaigns
