Agreed, they adjust mine too.

The only problem is they adjust the handicap based on the perfomance of the other sailors at the club, very few if any are sailing their boat to handicap, which gets frustrating when you sail your boat to handicap.

Hmm let me think, now who sails a V3000 on a Laser 3k handicap modified
with the new bigger rudder?

And should he she or they expect their handicap to be modified accordingly
I wonder.

That's before we start on the Phantoms..

Swanage (medium):

Stick to published PY.

Except if there is no published PY, then it's at the Sailing Committee's whim.

Also, in 2009 the Laser 2000 and RS Vision were raced off the same handicap (don't ask me what it was) to encourage "fleet" sailing.

The L2k and Vision are pretty close in performance (with or without a kite) I find.

Chipstead SC

Medium/Large club (bigger than Starcross/Brightlingsea/BCYC but smaller than HISC)

We predominantly do class racing but when we do handicap racing we adjust yardsticks locally, it’s a bit contentious but on a small lake like ours it has to be done.

When running handicap opens what should clubs do? Some clubs do these on local yardsticks which can advantage or disadvantage visitors bringing along a boat currently not sailed at the club. My thoughts are handicap opens should be done on PYs.

If the local handicap is fairer than the National one on that water then surely its in the best interests of all the competitors that you use it. If its not fairer than the National one then why would you use it at all?

Its good manners to inform what handicaps will be used in the NOR though. Saves someone being upset when they arrive. I have personal experience of turning up at a well known South coast club and being told that: we've dropped your class handicap by 90 points because we heard that you cleaned up at the so and so and I didn't want that hapening here. As the tidal conditions were completely different there wasn't a chance of that happening anyway, and needless to say I haven't ever been back there.

I agree that if a local handicap is fairer it should be used but what if a class of boat is competing that you have no local data on? Using the opinion above that Visions and L2ks sail at similar speeds....say for example there is a club that sails Laser 2000s and local data suggests that it is very hard to sail it to its yardstick and suggests a 30 point raise. This club has no Visions and therefore doesnt have the data to realise that they are also similarly disadvantaged so when a Vision comes along to a handicap open it has to sail off its PY. This instance doesnt seem very fair but what can be done about it?

I came a cropper with this one this summer when I attended a summer race week in a class not sailed at the club. The club yardstick committee had decided that similar boats that were sailed at the club (generally by beginners) were disadvantaged on the waters and had given them a 30 point bonus, because they didnt have data on my class I sailed off my PY and struggled to do as well against them as I had hoped. I am not bitter as I had a great week nonetheless but I just wondered what the consensus was on how best to get round this problem.

I wouldn't say that's strictly true. If I had the Streaker this year, my PY
WOULD have been adjusted.

Frensham - Strict PY (got rid of the kind PY for GP's
gentleman racing a few year back)

So no we have an ever increasing fleet of Phantoms....
