Shocked by the sad news.
Not only was Richard an awesomely good sailor, he was also one of the most humble. I shan't pretend I knew him well - I didn't, but he just came across as one if life's nice guys. On the odd occasion when I did manage to get anywhere near him on the water, he just found another gear and disappeared off into the distance again. My favourite memory of him was having spent six hours getting to the loft from Stockport after the M6 had been shut to pick up some new sails, being told that he wouldn't have bothered if it had been him. Our thoughts to his family, friends and all those who have worked with him over the tears. |

Really sad, I didn't know him well, but sailed against him a bit in Enterprises where he always had a reputation as a real gentleman.

On behalf of the Irish Fireball Class Association, I would like to convey our sympathies to the family, colleagues, friends and fellow competitors of Richard. He contested the 2007 Irish Fireball Nationals in Cork but he would also be known to the GP14 and Enterprise fleets on this side of the Irish Sea. Speed Sails have been used extensively by the Irish Fireball fleet so many of our members would have had direct dealings with him. The roll call of World, National and Endeavour Trophy wins is testimony to his sailing talent. |

On behalf of the members and committee of the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Richard’s family. We are shocked and saddened by this news. Richard was an ardent supporter not only of our club but also of sailing in Sri Lanka. He visited us often and many of us count him among our closest personal friends. We will all miss him very much.” Commodore (CMYC) Edited by Asanka |

On behalf of the members of Bartley Sailing Club it was with great sadness to to know that Richard has passed away. He was a great sailor and a real good man. We all at Bartley will miss him greatly. He was a good friend to many members and to the club in his support for many events, particularly The Bartley Burnout regatta. Our sympathy goes out to all his family and friends. The Commodore Bartley Sailing Club. |

My best wishes to Richard's family during this testing time.
Not only was Richard one of the most highly decorated sailors in the UK he was also one of the nicest guys you would wish to meet with not an ounce of arrogance or self indulgence that could have come with his immense talent. Having been sponsored by Richard for numerous years and having worked for him on and off it is with great sadness that I hear this news. He won with great honour and integrity and can also take great credit for the numerous sailing titles that his coaching and support won for those around him. My heartfelt sympathies to all his family and the staff at Speedsails. Liam Murray |

Richard was a hero of mine as I grew up in Ents & always will be - he won so many Championships yet was always so modest & down to earth. I had deep respect for his sailing, always fair and always happy to chat to anyone about the racing over a beer. His super-smooth steering meant he was electrically quick & I never saw Richard hitting a corner in 18 years of sailing against him, he was a supreme tactician. Richard will be sorely missed in the Ent fleet |

Richard was an exceptionally well liked and respected member of the sailing industry and wider sailing community. It is people like him who make it so special. On behalf of all at RS I would like to offer our heart felt sympathy to Richard's family and colleagues.
