Not sure if its happened yet but there's been talk on the UK 49er site of £2k being knocked on to the list price of new 49ers....... Reckon that can't be too bad for secondhand boats keeping their value. £4k for a new Laser seems a bit ridiculous, might aswell save the pennys and buy a second hand MPS.

Won't that make the 2nd hand market softer as people will be more likley to

A, buy a new boat as it is more affordable

B, the difference between 2nd hand and new is less, thus more buy new and so more 2nd hand boats around, thus lower price for 2nd hand.

A rising price of the new version usually pulls up 2nd hand prices.

Yea the full race laser is £4k but at our club at least almost no one has this, the basic laser with the basic version of the new kicker etc. is £3.5k. Still expensive but closer to £3k which i think someone said earlier is what they should cost. Yes laser are in a good position because at many clubs if you want good racing you must have one but this didnt happen by accident. If there wernt good points with the boatthen this wouldnt have happened.

Sorry Simon, reckon you picked me up wrong, the price of a new 49er is set to increase by £2k, not drop, therefore, as new boats increase in price, as you say, the price of secondhand boats may rise slightly, at least it will cap the depreciation for a while.

OK, yep, rising price of new product means S/H prices firm up.

Everyone knows the only good thing about the Laser is the racing.

Common if you want real value for money and a cheap new boat get an international 14. Now what was wrong with that statement . . . . . . . .?

In the motor trade if a manufacturer puts the price of there product up to much then new sails fall, and hence used prices crash!!  The problem with laser is they monopolise the market.  They are a great product but as long as people keep buying them they will keep charging the same money! so unless everyone is willing to boycott buying lasers the price will rise.

Controversial I know coming from me but compare a laser to an RS500 and the Laser then seems REALLY expensive.

The 500 really does look good and is going to do very well I think.
