Personally, I think increasing the profile of sailing as a sport is doomed to failure. Racing requires time, effort and dedication to the craft. I hate/hate/hate this focus on "racing" as the only thing sailing is. It isnt - it is a by-product of the activity and enjoyment of sailing. Promoting it as an activity stands a better chance of success. I know this forum is full of full-on racing people and racing is the be-all and end-all of what they enjoy - but that, in my view, turns off the general public to getting in to the love of sailing. Anyway, somewhat of a thread drift ..... ;-)

Thanks for reiterating what I said ( in your first sentence) I guess the participants didn't go into the sport to promote it (fair enough). It shows. Thinking any suggestion of increasing the profile of the sport is largely lip service? |

Peple dont relate to the sport, they relate to the personalities IN the sport. Sailing lacks enough personalities. Arguably, Alex Thomson has done more for the Vendee in terms of recognition, than the Vendee management themselves. Were someone like Alex media-fronting the Ineos team, then I could see much more general public interest and TV coverage.

Absolutely.
....although I don't think increasing participation is the only reason to promote a sport. Increasing public interest as a spectator sport has obvious benefits. In that respect the conferences are crucial, the public cannot relate to a sport without knowing and relating to the participants. Anyway, IMO the Prada cup so far has done very little to promote the sport in any respect. I've thoroughly enjoyed some of it though. |

I have yet to have any feedback conversation from a non-sailor that understood what racing a dinghy was all about from watching the very limited Olympic coverage. If you watched the Olympic sailing in Rio on TV, then its becuase you were already in to it, not because of it. Lets be honest, unless you are in to it, watching the Olympic sailing is not overly exciting or informative as to the sport. Whereas, watching the current AC, IS exciting, no matter where your interest lie. My youngest brother doesnt drive and never has and never will, but he watches F1.

It needs more diversity. Where are the females, ethnic minorities and disabled trans persons?

I find it hard to see how AC coverage can promote sailing as such (at least as far as encouraging participation), it is so far removed from the kind of sailing 99% of sailors do. I was going to say it's like comparing F1 to casual cycling but it's more like comparing the space shuttle to a penny farthing.
In that respect the Olympics was much better at showing the public what racing a dinghy was about.

I agree, the press conference compere is rubbish, thankfully the skippers are normally pretty good. I particularly like the quotes Spithill comes out with when he is there, the latest was about 'payback for the poms'. I dont think it is the role of the press conferences to promote the sport though, the few non-sailors watching the sailing definitely wouldnt watch the press conferences. The coverage of the sailing itself is what should be promoting the sport.

Fair comment. When it comes to promoting the sport the press conferences have been diabolical. Devoid of personality and comradery. Terry H did try to inject a bit of humour at one point but it looked more like gallows humour, maybe an attempt to unfreeze the terrible atmosphere........The conference presenter (who is he?) has about as much charm as a *******.
This kind of stuff is terribly important in promoting the sport. About a handful of the races have been very enjoyable though. Gotta take what excitement you can these days. |
