I would have thought Corbyn would quite like the sailing club ethos....

- everyone mucking in out of a sense of 'duty'

- the whole being greater than the sum of its parts

- a progressive social labour policy- first year member scrubs bogs, but through good union intervention of the solo class captain, he's elevated to greater importance untangling the mooring warps and race mark chains in a season or two.

And let's not forget the cakes - homemade, zero profit cake- baked by happy wives who know their place and do not apply for the 'shadow' committee.  Now there's one in the eye for the establishment- well the establishment that is Starbucks up the road- ripping us off, avoiding the corp tax of half stale, low fat blueberry muffins... the capitalist scum, paying staff a living wage when a volunteer should do it for free.

There's even a Billy Bragg song called 'Birds and Ships'... I've not listened to it, but it's pretty much all most sailors I know go on about.

One thing's for sure, under Corbyn Bewl are f*cked.

Nice to see that on the day that ILCA finally announce the availability of the long awaited new sail, the thread still goes off on a tangent. I suppose there's only so much you can say about it

Sadly (for forum fodder) it's not very controversial- I don't know many laser sailors who are opposed to the idea of subtle improvement to the rig for the longer term vitality of the class (and their boat fund!)

Sorry, Corbyn.....rude of me to get the name wrong. When he has been in office for ten years or so I may remember it....

They might not agree when they see what it will cost them  Wink

They'll be what they'll be... No point bleating about it, just by a rooster and sail local if you don't want to play at a certain level (eg why the hell would you buy a class legal sail if all you do is PY race at a local club?!?)

Anyway I bet they're cheaper than a D-Zero main, and a top of the line north solo rag is over a grand these days...

£395 for a radial Laser sail doesn't look too extortionate even if it looks as out of date as bell bottom jeans. Kneewrecker touched upon Solo sails and a North 3DL moulded sail will set you back an eye watering £1,200+. To be fair, it is a thing of rare beauty. Jeremy Corbyn might not approve but many a middle aged empty nester including me finds it hard to resist. At least there are numerous other sailmakers offering similarly competitive sails for much lower prices.

it is indeed - nor am I questioning the value.  My race sail for windsurf board was £850 and I don't regret a penny of it.  But I'd add £395 for Laser sail is pretty much in-line with where I'd see it if a top Solo sail is upwards of a grand...  options for all, increased durability on the Laser one and this is a good thing imho.

Cant compare apples with pears mate.

The Laser rag can and is produced at a profit for a fraction of what Laser sell the official sail for (even taking into account the minimal royalty).

If the Mk 2 is launched at £395 then that is at least a step forward and better than other regions which have seen an increase of 25% over the current sail.

n'ah it's comparing jazz apples with granny smiths...

At the end of the day it's just a triangle of man-made cloth suspended between two poles to catch the wind and push a lump of plastic through the water.

It's come down in price, it  lasts a bit longer- it in all likelihood will be nicer to use - that's all there is to say for it.  Wish I could spin that into something negative, but really, I can't... it's a good thing.  I've pre-ordered already.

And to continue the analogy, whilst a jazz apple might taste nice sitting on your own in the corner of the playground, if you prefer to eat in the dinner hall with your mates then a bag of granny smiths will do just fine, especially these new fat, juicy ones.
