Firstly I have great respect for Simon and Brenda....but..... It is a great idea and could have been fun, in fact it was in the first year with the added excitement of sailing at Weymouth but the courses were very tough for small boats at Calshot ant the entry too small to create a buzz. It also is a bleak places in my opinion.

I think it's more the fragmented thing and whatever you think, the farce that is the yardstick system contributes to that.
It's not the only factor, but it's one that has almost certainly prevented me travelling any further afield than round here, seriously why would you? As to that event, it has all the attributes that could be very attractive, but is missing some 'Magic' lets face it having an Insurance company as a lead sponsor really sets the imagination afire - not. I don't know what other folk like to look forward to at events, with class events it's obviously hooking up with old pals and racing, but with 'open' events there needs to be something else as well to create that 'pull effect'. What draws me to the things I do go to, Dinghy Shows, Boat Shows, Round Island Challenges, it's either hoping to see something new or a bit of adventure, now as it happens and I'm now already disposed of now, the breadknife has her claws into me as penance for last weekends open meeting, but with the D Zeroati turning up there, had I spotted that and I could have rounded up some of our local SODS (Solution One Design Sailors

People go to open events for all sorts of reasons. I know a number of people who just want to race all the time and they turn up at open meetings whatever the conditions and race. It is away of life. Very bad for relationships however. Others have specific aims in Inland or National Championships. One needs to be very committed to do traveler circuits, championships and the odd extra event like Sailfest. I spectate and offer assistance to 'The former Boy' and our little Byte team. This weekend I may visit Carsington to watch 505, Javelin and Hornet, my very good friends the Brothers Reid are in with a chance of winning the Jav's in their Nationals. I can pretty much do what I like as I have been married for forty odd years and am on parole.
It means that race attendances will be restricted to single people, the sad or the elderly. I think this matters much more than PY problems.

Er when does this happen? I've done a thirty year stretch, how much longer? Is there a parole board

It's a bit like release on compassionate grounds rather than 'parole'.

Well, having just got back from SailFest, I have to say that again (my 3rd time) it was an excellent event.
The weather was excellent - little bit light on Saturday but pretty well perfect for all the rest. Racing was tight, on excellent courses (PRO was a splendid chap too ![]() Great atmosphere throughout, with a really nice sociable bar on site. Tremendous turnout by the D-Zeros..... quite a sight out on the water. I really would urge anyone to mark their diaries for next year ![]() |

With only 11 entries overall, do you reckon it will be on next year?

Certainly need more entries, ended up with 39 boats as D-Zero nationals certainly part of GJW Direct SailFest. SailFest has now hosted six National Championships over its three editions and this year we welcomed the RAF SA Regatta which definitely meets the objective of a multi class/format event.

If I remember rightly the first Sailfest was meant to be an annual celebration of the Olympic Games held at the Olympic venue, WPNSA. This was an exciting and attractive idea. The sailing was good for all classes and the races were run really well. There were over 100 boats I believe and it was looking good for a successful yearly event. Then the move to Calshot? Calshot, whatever happened at Calshot apart from flying boats? Last year some of the less experienced sailors struggled to cross Southampton Water to get onto the racecourse and the journey back was hazardous for the slower boats. On the Sunday no proper racing was possible which was annoying for those trying to have a Nationals. From a sailors point of view why go there?
I still think that Sailfest is a good idea but take it back to the original concept and location. I hate to criticize, people who do, when I don't. But I would like too see Sailfest succeed.

Happy to revisit WPNSA - BUT you would be looking at ++ 30% in entry fees Also no on-site camping and limited accommodation etc If people are prepared to pay more it gives far more scope - organising events is not cheap |
