I think we had them on 115 (which is a 1% quicker than a Radial) for interclub racing. That seemed to tally with two other club's experience but on twilight racing at our club, which was on a very tight waterway and normally in light winds, the Technos got absolutely walloped; to the stage where an original Windsurfer with 4.5m sail was often quicker, crew skill being equal. In a planing breeze the Techno is quite quick. The Techno 6.8 seems to suffer from a more binary performance than a longboard or even an RSX, as Grumpf indicates. I managed to pretty quickly calculate that our official yardsticks were fairly accurate, as far as the relationship between the boards went, by looking at one club that had top-class sailors across three classes. I imagine that checking some regatta results would give you a rough figure pretty quickly.

So here's the problem we face with the Techno, we rated it about 1085 if it's using the centreboard, but if the wind breaks force 4 ad it reverts to sailing off its fin in open water bashing corners(which race boards don't really do, hence they can be treated more like dinghies)then it'll be more like 875, so you could either split it, or average the two and be wrong all the time.

She'd like that! Beating me, I give her enough stick week in week out racing her in her Snipe in my EPS and windsurfing with my Raceboard, I shall tell her...
I'll have a look at a Techno, they're pretty slow, but didn't I read somewhere here, was it on the Sailfest thread, that Simon has some data from their Worlds? |

Using a PY of 887 would give Jenna a corrected time of about 4hrs 19mins which would put her in 17th place, 36 minutes behind the winning cat. In the lottery which is handicap racing, and taking into account the experience of some of the leading helm/crews, that sounds about right. You've just been bumped to 20th!

Do you have a feeling for a number for a Techno 6.8?
My son wants to give it a go, and it would be good to get someone else's idea of a starting point. We were thinking a little quicker than a Laser around the course. |

We've been talking about it down the club tonight, what we should nominate the Raceboard 9.5 at, Richard who did regularly race on Sunday Mornings has never been beaten over the water, in any condition, not by the MPS or a well sailed Contender and we have some skilled helms at both. So that puts it in mid 800's territory 850 seems to be favourite, then running what a smaller sail would do to an MPS on my peaky spreadsheet raises to 887 with one metre less canvas for a Raceboard 8.5 which was what Genna used.

given the tidal considerations, I'd say it was probably a proper 3.8m raceboard. The old ones are still (relatively) competitive, especially if they've been well maintained.

We have on a few occasions had a windsurfer take part in our fast handicap fleet races. Can't remember the type of board but we sail him off of 975, which seems to have worked reasonably well.

When they went for 'unlimited pumping' ... yes turkeys really can vote for Christmas. It killed longboard racing in the UK so be careful what you go for ....
The pity ands frankly shame was the national 'authorities' - (UKBSA at the time and RYA) could not see the logic that would ultimately lead to the effective demise of the sport as a 'mass activity' that had introduced so many into small craft racing. In the day it could be run alongside regular dinghy racing at most clubs - it was seldem the clubs that got snooty about boards despite what you might here occasionally - it was the morons who undermined the sport through not appreciating what they already had. Fools and their sport are soon parted .. perhaps. Yes I know it is a bit harsh - but heck it could have been so much better ..... Maybe a lack of clear vision was the problem. The moment dinghy racing allows something along the same lines - that it ... you should run for the hills or maybe get a lead mine. Mike L. |
