I raised it at the AGM about 4/5 years ago. Got no where. "Always been this way", "Encourages turn out", blah blah blah. Can't say I have tried very hard though, so ought to raise it again directly with the SC.

I would say the other way. As said above our experience is that it has not affected turnout either negatively or positively it just looks better on the club website (you can see 20+ competitors in a series as opposed to just the 2 or 3 who 'qualify').

That's the problem with ideas... you talk about them in a closed group, get some feedback. Sometimes it's not what you want to hear, but you take it on the chin and bin it off, because the person who has responded to you is trusted and respected by you, and at least they've done you the courtesy of being honest. Anyway, let's assume the above doesn't happen, and the guys says 'yep, sounds like a plan' and your idea is through stage gate 1- the mates test. Onto stage gate 2... the committee. Maybe they're receptive, maybe they're not. If it's bucket of water on a current fire fight, then it stands a good chance of getting an audience- and in the main these are good people trying the damnedest to do something in an environment unreceptive to change, often without the authority of a normal business type management or any real mandate to execute a decision. Then you (+ a committee member) take it out to the wider membership... then all the pettiness and wants and desires and conflicts raise up. Then you bin the idea off properly... thinking, frankly, it's not worth your time or patience. You have a newfound respect for anyone on the committee, how do they do it? But you've also gone away from the experience fairly convinced never try anything like that again. Some people would say ideas are dangerous, in reality, they can just be a bit of waste of time. I would say this is a matter for a sailing committee (depending on their terms of reference of course).
At Hunts they have responsibility for all matters related directly to racing activities (but can refer matters to the main committee if required).
At Hunts we just decided to change it as a sailing committee and started scoring that way from the start of the next sailing year (1st March) so we did not affect the club championship results. |

We changed ours a long time ago. However, these days, with all the results being posted on websites using sailwave, it kind of just does it anyway, doesn't it? The results person puts the sailors in, and a table comes up with everyone on it. It would sem you'd have to actively reject people off the list who hadn't got enough actual starts for them not to show up, and wouldn't you then also lose their placings off it all?
So, yes, you need to have discards kicking in, but up to that point you would include DNCs. For a long, odd numbered series we use half plus one, and for even numbered ones half. |

Hi All
Sorry people are going off on there high horse again about nothing. To have a chance in most series you need to do a certain amount of races to not count a DNS which in a long series with lots of people doing odd races generally has a very high score, it used to be about 75/80% of races we are reducing this to 50% BUT you always counted as a qualifier even with one result and ten DNS. There had to be three races sailed by for it to count as a series. Hope this clarified things. |

maybe at your club Gordon. I know there was (don't know if it's current) a minimum number to get your name on the series sheet as a qualifier.
Personally it has never bothered me, but clearly it bothers some people... and it's understandable, being told you 'don't qualify' is usually associated with negativity.

Everyone should get a result regardless of races completed.
If you don't do all the races at a nationals you don't get scored non-qualified you just get lots of points.

It is very unlikely to make any difference to the overall results .... so why not allow all to 'qualify' ... if they have to count a couple of DNS what problem does it cause anyone ?
You want club membership and racing to prosper ? Yes ? Start by getting rid of petty stuff that hacks off the 'occasional' racers. If you don't start from that position .. don't expect them to renew their subscriptions in the same numbers every year either. Remember THEY subsidise the regular racers !! The same thing applies to 'personal handicap' racing ... it really does encourage the back of the fleet (aka 'participation') . So what if it is not 'purist' ... Golf clubs do rather well out of the concept and there will still be plenty of 'open' (no personal handicap) competition at sailing clubs as well if they went that way a bit more often. Move forward. The choice is 'adapt' ... or else .... Mike L. PS - I think Will Carling had a few comments on those with rather 'traditional views' as well ... ![]() Edited by blaze720 - 03 Dec 13 at 4:26pm |

The series I run for the kids is held over the summer holidays which means a lot of them will miss races because of being away. I therefore allow them two weeks' worth of discards, plus everyone gets a place anway. We use the term 'qualify' simply to get them used to the process as well as to encourage turnout. It's a sponsored sereis with good prizes so worth getting out for.
In terms of formats, the thing putting me off racing the D1 at Grafham is that there are lots of tiny fleets. If I race with the assy fleet there will only be about six boats - and that's on a good day. Surely for a winter series best to merge at least inot fast and slow handicap. At the moment I'd be better off RTC at Hunts to get used to sailing it with lots of boats around, and just going to Grafham to practice the kite work. Edited by winging it - 03 Dec 13 at 4:26pm |
