Does this indicate Rs are moving further from proper dinghies?
Seems a bit of a 'me too' design but TBH a beach cat is not about the finer points of design, it's about marketing, selling and delivering something that works in a reliable way. If they can do that sharing the Feva/Vision/whatever supply chain, it should work.
But hardly a remedy for the disappointment of the 900?

This comes across as if you feel that RS "owe" the sailing world a new good racing class, as if somehow with the 900 they let "us" down. Not as if it was our money funded the 900- hell, going for something with a much better chance of being financially successful is a smart move after an expensive attempt at building an olympic boat.

yes, it's a cat, so not a dinghy.  I guess you could see that as 'moving away', although I reckon they'd rather you saw it as 'expanding into'.

As to the other point on the RS900...  why bring that out and ruin a perfectly good racing fleet that is the RS800?

how would I know?  I could ask someone if you like, but personally I'm not interested in HP boats like this, and from what I'm seeing/feeling, the market of dinghy joe is moving away from them too except at 'elite levels', which frankly few of us even really aspire to anymore.  I'd rather have an Icon, 400 or a Merlin than an 800, 14 or 49er....

This new cat looks interesting from the rotomould perspective- it looks lighter to me, more details will follow no doubt, but I think it fits in nicely to some ideas Peaky was sharing at the FOM about rotomoulds and the/our dismissive attitudes holding back a gift horse for sailing as a sport.    SO despite it being a multihull, (breaking down my irrational prejudice can only go so far), I'm open minded and optimistic that it signals something more exciting in rotomould technology.  Who knows, something that might migrate in a future monohull- from RS or another builder.

I'll keep an eye on this, good luck to the them for again stepping into new territory.

Oh no, was I ranting again. Thermoplastics are the future of small boats, and cats are awesome fun. The Y&Y review of the Nacra 17 says it costs about £24k. You could buy a fleet of this new boat for that much, and give them to your mates to ensure you get decent racing.

doesn't look "HP" to me. Looks like a beach toy for the big (especially in Europe) beach toy market. Far better market for those than for some niche HP boat or any attempts to dislodge existing low performance boats. Doesn't even need to be that light or stiuff- just a bit lighter than the competition. Not everyhting has to be the second coming, some things are just companies making smart moves into existing high volume markets.

However this is the dinghy development forum, not the 'how to make money in unrelated markets' forum.

Probably a bit early to say that.   But I do think "proper" dinghies, ie, hand laid, with expensive materials etc will eventually become a niche market at high prices.

It could be that rotomolding is replacing high-end grp hull dinghies just as grp replaced wood.   Early grp boats were worse than plywood boats but are now much better.   I'm sure rotomolding will get better.

RS are a business and selling rotomolded boats is sensible.   It's not just beach toys; there are 171 Fevas at the worlds right now.   I doubt any of the competitors see their Fevas as anything but "proper" boats.
