Is there any truth in the rumour that yachts used to be painted pink because it was the lightest paint at the time?
Needs to sail more...

I really doubt that even at superyacht size the difference in the density of paint pigments actually makes any difference.

The fact that it's called 'Rooster' is pretty funny.

There's always the half and half approach.

Waterline paintjobs always look nice.

Tom - I don't think the variation in the weight of paint makes much difference but back in the early 1980s, the choice of hull colour could make a significant difference when having a new grp boat built. For the Rondar 'works' 505 a great deal of research went into which gel coats gave the best finish for the minimum amount of material - the results were a black hull and a 'slime green' deck. The results were not exactly pleasing to the eye but the weight savings went into extra stiffness - with noteable results! IIR, the relative weights went black, bright green, then a 'French Aircraft Grey' - a good many Rondar Boats of that era were in those colours (in particular a quick five-o and albacore......a handful of contenders......plus a few others!)

The colours made for dramatic pictures too.........

Wasn't a matter of taste Gordon - more a case of letting the rest of the fleet know we were there!! (as if hey couldn't hear us!!)!

Thanks D, I knew there was some truth in it somewhere!! I think people must have had the same train of thought with 1980s bathroom suites....

I had a black Rondar Albacore (below) it was 2kg overweight when it was built in 1977 so someone got the sums wrong.
Mind you it was still going well 30 years later, but the decks got very hot in the summer sunshine.
