As it was the wind was markedly absent so neither of us sailed it.

What a pity !    After such a great weekend at Burghfield  SC we were speculating in the bar (as you do of course) as to what you lot were making of it at Hunts .. we had a decent if moderate breeze today here.

Anyway the talk by the time a second beer was in hand was that if you wanted we can bring a couple of Icons along in the very near future and join with you one Sunday ......  that is if you can sort it out with your club people.  Let the CA know if this might work - we don't have to sail the ones we bring if there are enough locals interested.

The worst incident ?  A lost halyard up a mast ... so well done to all of you !   We are making a couple of the boats available tommorow as well .. so if any of you out there still want to try Icon this weekend .. but in a much more suitable moderate 10mph or so forecast for Sunday either just turn up at Burghfield SC and/or contract Mike or Charlotte Bell of the CA if you want to chat details with someone.  We will still be providing sun and warmth FOC of course.   They will be made available from around mid-day on a first come basis but we will endevour to get all interested into the boats for a decent period of time.

Tom Gruitt was there today and as well as sailing  Icon took quite a number of photos from both rescue boat and the shore ... we are yet to see them but they should be good and will post a couple here if he is happy for that.

I'm working on the pics now so they will be ready this afternoon. Sorry for the delay but I had a path to lay yesterday.
Needs to sail more...

The first time I sailed it was pretty nightmarish.  It was horribly gusty and even more shifty than usual, all this combined with a novice crew who kept moving the wrong way (not your fault dear, mwah) meant I didn't get a great impression.  At all. In the afternoon the wind had steadied and two of our young instructors took it out and absolutely loved it.  They started incredibly conservatively then just cut through the fleet really smoothly.  The speed was quite something to see.

I really didnt fancy it yesterday - due for knee surgery any day now, so being hyper protective of it.  Neither did Jeffers or anyone else because it was a complete drifter.  Only those desperate to score in the last two races of the March series actually went out.

I'm hoping to get out again this week, though I'm not sure who with.  I do think the crew needs more experience than i first thought, but at the same time I think it would be a straightforward enough boat to learn.

You could bring a couple to Hunts and we could sign you in, but likewise we could all go to Grafham where I am also a member, and sail off the GL py!  The snag with that is that it's hugely more expensive than coming to Hunts.  I will have a look at some good dates.

I'd not base a sailing experience on last Sunday, Nessa - I was wondering why I'd bought a new sail for the Lightning when I clearly couldn't sail and the boat was clearly rubbish. Move on a week, and the new sail is wonderful, the boat a dream and me a sailing expert. Steady breeze and sunshine is what you need!

As Nessa says we both decided not to worry... I ended up being RO and enjoyed watching them drift round to all then get beaten by an Optimist by almost 100 seconds on corrected time!

Not a day for trying a new boat, hopefully the forecast will be better soon and I will have an opportunity to go for a float.

It is worth talking with the Icon CA as quite a few of the imported boats have the rudder pivot point in the wrong position.  The rudder blade position resulting is slightly swept back which can give a fair bit of weather helm.  The leading edge should end up fractionally forward of vertical for neutral (recommended) helm.

The modification takes just 10 minutes and is very straightforward.  If the boat you have has not been checked or modified over here you will need to do this asap.

That last photo should be in the perching thread - crew doing all the work while the helm has a nice sit down!
