Many small classes (as in boat size) this is possible, either because of boat longevity (Firefly springs to mind) or because fleets are small, so even if the standard is high, the last % of boat speed makes less difference off the start line. But a big fleet, high profile one design? You need to get the wallet out.

There is a Hadron H2 due to join us in the handicap fleet on our lake. I reckon it's going to suit its owner perfectly. At least it will give us something new to look at that's easy on the eye. Hopefully there is enough of a niche for the Hadron to fill to give it some longevity as a class.

Of all the new single handers over the past few years, this really deserves to succeed. I was an `early adopter` with a d zero, but can see my self being attracted to this. It ticks all the boxes for me

Accommodation, in a holiday location, in school holiday time - which is when most champs are held - is expensive. Yes, camping is an option for those that choose to, but for us it's a family holiday and we like our comforts. That means stumping up.

Sort of, but round the other way. Chance of us choosing to go to any of these locations for more than a long weekend is remote, so it's a championship with family holiday as a sideline. And regardless of whether the trouble n strife comes along, the accommodation cost is what it is.

I think we're missing the point here though, in many classes it's certainly possible to enter a national championship and get a decent (top 10) finish in an old £1500 boat and it's certainly possible to find accommodation for significantly less than £1500. Sure it ain't gonna happen in a Merlin but you pays your money....... And if (like me) you're sailing a £1500 boat you probably aren't at the level where you'd win the Nats even in a brand spanking new boat.
