I would just like to point out Seamonkey that you have absolutely no first hand experience of either our experience or the conditions themselves. If you would like to know my credentials you are more than welcome to ask Jaws or HughPH who would know, and perhaps you can see that we were simply unlucky.

Next time why not do some training at Rutland or Grafham where the downside of a capsize it typically less expensive and the process of launch & recovery is easier.

Yeh travel 100 miles to sail instead of going to your local club - just in case it turns out a bit risky to sail - you might save yourself a few quid.
Apart from the £50+ fuel, £60+ accommodation, £40+ Food, £30 fees, no time for homework, Dad has to be away all weekend as well, mum is lonely so drinks the whole bottle of wine etc etc.

BTW 29er masts are in 3 parts, so its often possible to replace just the trashed part at comparatively low cost - so hopefully no great burden on our insurance premiums.
Look at the photos of the Starcross Steamer. It was windy, choppy, shallow- by your definition, no-one should have gone out - life's too short for that sort of boredom / lack of adventure.

Looks a bargain compared to the time & money required to source & fit a new rig ... and the time off the water whilst the nice man at the insurance company reads your paperwork and writes out a cheque ...

A bargain if a mast snaps every time each boat goes out in more than 20 knots. Not a bargain if it's say once in every 20 sails in those winds (a number picked out the air). A mast snap isn't common in 20-25 knots, but it is in 30-35 knots. We left the beach thinking it was 20-25 knots, and we were met with 30-35 knots plus gusts. These things happen. I can't tell the future. If you have a magical way to tell what the wind's going to do, you'd better patent it quick; every sailor on the planet wants a piece of it. I've actually decided that I'm going to revise my sailing limit down a bit after that to say 22 knots average, since I didn't enjoy the experience. I got pushed under water by the broken rig one time, which is not a particularly pleasant situation and one I do not wish to repeat.

Guys

Don't let one poster upset your weekend of fun. I was a "support crew" at the Feva WOT training at Island Barn at the weekend. I saw 26knots on the display, it possibly went up from there, fortunately apart from a few scratches to one boat, a hole in a kite, and some tired sailors, they all had a great weekend.

On a side note, the 29ers at Rutand didnt go out all weekend, the Fevas did. Do you want to moan about the feva that broke its mast, I am sure others have claims going in around the country... http://www.rsfeva.org/

Thankfully we are only discussing broken boats ... part of being a good sailor is knowing when to "live to fight another day" ... if you guys are not old enough to drive then your experience will be limited but you seem to be learning from you post ... continue to learn and even if you get as far as rigging on the shore and it starts to look a bit gnarly then just wait for a better day.

Use your time for some shore drill or boar prep ... it's mid January, the forecast WAS nasty and what happened to you was foreseeable ... the video clearly shows that you were struggling from the start ...

I can remember going out in far worse conditions than that on the Irish sea - the difference would have been that we were in more stable and far cheaper boats, but the idea was the same - push yourselves, feel like you are alive, have fun, get better at sailing. Looked to me from the video that you were well supported, knew what you were doing, but were caught out (as Iand most others have been) by the waves coming ashore. I'd hate to think youngsters will be forced to not do things like this because of "the risk".

Any views from people who work in boat insurance?

for the record, dinghy racing/sailing at Grafham finished at lunch time yesterday because of the wind.

I very much agree. Fair play to these guys for trying. Much rather see keen young sailors test their limits.

In reply to the comments regarding insurance, the pure cheek of people to associate these guys with the increase of insurance premiums is petulant. I've been paying insurance for years, the word 'greed' comes to mind. Insurance companies don't need to compensate for claims by charging 'everyone' extra.  It's a common myth.
