I tend to agree (glad it isn't only me feeling a bit grumpy) and its not at all surprising that things break if you take them past their design loads - hence the 3 failures

Well you are both Grumpy. Yes it was windy, and yes things might get broken in those conditions, but would you rather they played on their Wii's? I for one would rather they sailed. The one who broke its mast in the shore break was just unlucky - nothing to do with design loads. The other we don't know about - it appears to have happened out on the water but we don't know how. The 'Top Dad' who will no doubt be picking up much of the bill didn't look too grumpy so neither should you be. |

Well you'd assume so wouldn't you. But that's what insurance is for? :D

It was reading less than 25 when we launched, around 22-23mph and constant. The video's story "25 and building" is a little more dramatic than the reality was at this time. We've all sailed in that before, and had it been much more I would never have launched. As we were launching it began to pick up a bit, and while out there an unforecast squall came through. We didn't expect that and would never have launched in those conditions. The wind wasn't the problem, either. The waves were a lot larger than I've ever seen before at TBYC. If you can honestly say that you've never been caught out by a squall before then by all means say it was stupid, but sailing's an unpredictable game that involves harnessing the weather and the sea: some of the most volatile and powerful forces on the planet. It's always a risk, and when we launched the risk seemed low enough to justify going out. As it happened, we were caught out on the offchance.
Both breaks were due to capsizes. "Top Dad's" boat was left with a bit of damaged progrip. I capsized in a bad tack, and the moment myself and my crew got round to the board I told him we were going to right the boat and head straight back in. Before we righted it, it went halfway between capsized and inverted, and I think that the size of the waves was enough to snap the mast on the bottom. I don't intend on claiming any more than necessary, since I too don't enjoy putting up everyone's insurance premiums. Edit- talking of design loads, the other snapped mast occurred after the 8th capsizes in a row (they righted it and it flipped over before the could get moving. I don't know more about those circumstance, but both boats were otherwise performing fine. Any mast will snap in an inversion in waves.

Chop, shallow water and plenty of breeze for these guys was always going to equal a broken rig or two ... should insurance cover somthing that could have been foreseen?

As I said before, we've sailed in 20-25 knots plenty of times before. That's what we thought we were going out in. The wind picked up to something like 32 gusting 41. As a matter of strict policy I never sail in anything stronger than force 6, which is the same as that of the 29er class racing limit. The boat can take those winds. The wind we thought we launched in was below that self-imposed - and personally experienced - limit. Perhaps as we were launching it picked up more, but it's hard to tell with the onshore waves; the boat's always a pain to launch in 15+ knots S, SW or W. The fact we all seemed to capsize whilst launching is because one tipped over, and then the domino effect kicked in. Luck was not on our side and we all started to head in at the same time. In heading in, I had to tack round, and that was when I capsized. Soon after, the other boat which later snapped its mast capsized. We weren't putting the kite up and zooming off; we were heading in after 15 minutes afloat.

Well looking at the video of the conditions when you were rigging I'm not at all surprised you trashed your kit ... Next time why not do some training at Rutland or Grafham where the downside of a capsize it typically less expensive and the process of launch & recovery is easier.

I don't think the resolution of the camera with the amount of zoom it had on was good enough to pick up the fact that every broken wave brought spray well over the sea wall. Furthermore, the video clearly shows comparatively fewer white horses before the launch compared to when people were out. As to the suggestion of a lake, the nearest sailable one for 29ers is either one of the London based ones or Alton Water, which seems a considerable waste of time and money for sailors who cannot yet drive. Lastly, the idea of boathandling not being up to scratch and the sailors not being that good an ability, this is highly offensive to the judgement of ourselves and our parents. 3 of us have previously been gold or silver fleet at a world championships, and in November we went out at an open training at Rutland in 35knts of wind where there were comparable waves to the ones we launched in. What we could not predict was the spike in wind strength far beyond any forecast we had seen for maximum gust. We were expecting, even from launching, a training session of maximum 30 ish knts, something that has to be trained in if racing is to occur in 25. Furthermore, we evaluated the risks in that the wind was from the direction producing the least waves bar a Northerly, which would be risky in that if there was a problem then the wind would take people offshore. Lastly, at the TT squad training at Grafham on the same day, every 29er that went out broke something, including a mast, along with all but one 420. If the fact that one of our 29ers was entirely fine except for slightly more peeled progrip than before, surely this offers a close average to the damage levels?
