Its an interesting thought though. Are there packages that could be put together?

Obviously much trickier for CA managed classes than manufacturer led ones. But should the first season's CA membership include a voucher for a class training event? Are there class specific frequently replaced items that the CA could purchase in bulk at a heavy discount and offer free or cheap with membership renewals?

I admire the though given to solving the 'how do we get more into the sport' problem.  However racing boats simply will not sell that way - Farr 3.7 included .... you might just get the model to work with boats specifically for occasional recreational sailors.  Think sailing holiday companies etc is about as close as you might ever get.  If everyone else is simply wrong on this, grab this tragically ignored opportunity, get selling and make that second million.

Does anyone seriously think that target demographic only lacks a bundled package to get into dinghy racing ?  If it could work surely others would have used it before board sailing went over the edge .... Wink

I think you may have misunderstood the Farr 3.7's proposition. The class is not focused on getting new prospects into sailing. It is aimed at providing the correct stepping stone for those that are already sailing to:

1. provide an attainable trapeze helm platform for all waters
2. to enable people to learn to trapeze helm
3. to teach the skills necessary to transfer into skiffs (49er / 49erFX etc...)
4. be an easy own, light, fun exciting boat within reach of most pockets
5. a great self build project
6. to provide a platform for racing for all sexes and ages without the vices of other trap helm boats

If you were looking at creating a boat focused at new prospects a single handed trapeze helming boat isn't the boat ANYONE would choose. Just because the boat is focused at the lighter end of the weigh scale (therefor catering for the youth market), and is well mannered doesn't mean it is for a beginner.

How much money do you think we (I) have spend then iGRF? I'd love (honestly) to hear some of you marketing wisdom. Or when you say 'they are all doing it wrong', are actually saying you believe the boats are wrong, and not the marketing etc...?

Well in order for it to work there would need to be''joined up thinking' to use marketing speak, I'm just running a flag up the pole to see if it flies, putting it out there, suggesting somebody needs to get their boats in a row, pushing the envelope for a deliverable future for the sport.

There are even more people out there who have never heard of dinghy racing either and no significant marketing effort is ever made to attract them.

The difference being that the Alto and the Icon had some commercial backing, the Farr has had none (to my knowledge).

It is a niche boat (IMO) so I doubt that volumes will ever be that high but to get a builder on board who is willing to supply kits as well as complete boats (IIRC) is a good thing. The hard part is raising awareness. there are a lot of sailing people out there who have never heard of the D-Zero or the Aero despite all the 'noise' that is around them.

Then again other than RS I thing everyone in the dinghy market is doing it wrong and the fact that the boat might not be at the dinghy show and even if it was nobody could buy it to be delivered after the show on 'easy terms' or with the benefit of a trade in deal is part of the problem.
