only really to 2 things to think about.

1) get your saddle height right.

2) always try and use a smaller gear than you think you need. nothing is worse for the knees than trying to turn a large gear.

oh and allways buy the lightest bike you can afford!

Like those bikes, Grumpf!

I'll have to try out saddle heights on my wife's bike (it isn't too girly!) and see if I can ride that before trying some others.

I know (and understand why) they're good for backs, but is there any reason why they'd be better than "normal" bikes for ankles?

Also, I reckon G.R.F. will have a field day with the suggestion...

Thing is, that means "quite a lot, really, once you strip away the daft posturing".  Tongue

Anyway, regardless of efficiency, good posture etc, the point I was sort of making is that there is nothing stylish about recumbents. At all. I mean, look at the one pictured. Most of the ones I see in Cambridge (and they're quite rare, as they make for truly dreadful city bikes- reduced visibility in both senses is not your friend, being able to see and be seen over cars IS) are piloted by bearded socks 'n' sandals wearing types.
