OK I am somewhere between B & C. Howevewr woodworking skills and equipment are zero. So I would like to find someone to build a bare hull for me from a kit provided by ???

I see myself sanding and finishing the bare hull.

I suggest we get a co-op together to help source items from UK sources.

Any one else interested in working together I can set up a conference call facility to get this going. Send me a PM and I am happy to lead the call.

If there is enough interest is it worth getting a mould taken off Jack's (assuming he would be up for it) and getting some hulls made in foam sandwich? I would love to build one but still have another development project going nowhere in the garage at the moment.Alternatively use the CAD file to create a former and then build in the same way as  GRF's monster.. see his blog for the way it was done.

Jeremy I like this idea, perhaps someone should approach the boys in Romsey to see how much.

I have just asked a quick question to a builder i know and he has given a rough ballpark figure for taking a mould off the outer hull only of £1k. The rest could be built in foam sandwich panels. If there was enough interest the mould cost is not much really if you base it on say 4 or 5 boats being built.

Building a jig and knocking out a few foam hulls is something less that rocket science. You don't need to flop a mould of an existing boat, and it may not be worth it for a ahort run. A jig can be pulled up out of cheap materials. There's also the advantage that a boat built on a plug and faired and painted tends to work out lighter than a boat finished in a female mould with gel coat and so on.

I must say UKP1,000 sounds extraordinarily cheap for a female mould. Its not so much the cost of the materials and time taken to flop the mould off that costs, you understand, its the work getting the boat that is acting as plug up to a high enough standard of finish. If its a normal used boat like most others then she'll need to be repainted, faired up and refinished, preferably to a mirror finish. Then Jack gets to be without his boat whilst all this is done.

Considering I had a jig made for the Banshee's that have been built for £400 I think 1k is an expensive way of building 3/4 boats! But thanks for asking the question of a builder. you are obviously expecting big numbers!

This is an ideal cheap home build wooden boat, taking mounds off it and making it foam sandwich destroys what this boat is about for me. If you get a pro build then the price will escalate and then the boat loses its niche imo.

but surely getting  a foam hull is  easier than building a ply one, It doesn't need to be in carbon, and the rest can always be built in ply if wanted?Working foam is a hell of alot easier than ply.
