"build to last longer" - ho ho
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

The pic was taken by the RO just as we were crossing the finish line in hideously gusty conditions; we were sailing quite free just to make sure we kept the boat on her feet and didn't get blown over (as happened despite similar precautions in the next race!) in the last 100 metres from the leeward mark to the line.

The whole day's proceedings were dictated by who capsized the least - while the average wind wasn't that strong, gusts were measured up to 35mph, which is windy even for a 3k.

Letting the outhaul off doesn't sound like a good idea. If your main looks like this photo, then the mast needs to be straightened up a little bit in the lower half by tightening the lowers up and possibly winding the spreaders forward a couple of turns.
Also, make sure the tack isn't too far away from the mast. I don't know how the tack is attached to the mast on a 3k, but if it's a webbing and buckle or a rope lashing system then it might be an idea to tighten this up a bit.
