And if it did, as long as it could be made to fit the same carrier, then everything would be compatible with any new breakthroughs like that. It's the vehicle manufacturers that need to be regulated. This is the joy of the free market, absolutely no common sense. |

One theory I read regarding autonomous cars is that they could make congestion and environmental issues worse. Scenario was that if you're, say, going into town shopping and can't find parking or it looks a bit pricey, just send the car home. Then call it back when you want to go home, doubling the distance it travels. Instead of walking with the kids to school, stick 'em in the car and send it on its way.
Possibly an Uber type thing, just pay for your use, could be the future. Theres a lot of cars on what amounts to long term hire at the moment anyway.

several solutions here need merging.... pay as you go EV autonomous cars, where you receive discounts for multi passenger pick ups for one journey. Catch a car to the train/bus station or airport? then bundle the price in to the ticket offering discounts for those long trips, easyjet-cars anyone? (shudders).
for owned cars GRF is right about battery stations and the need to make common types, perhaps a few size options though for varying needs. all "driver" cars need removing from the road or have a special lane for them. pay as you go offers no car parking issues, the providers will have their own car parks that the car gos back to ready to send one at your convenience, alongside owned cars there will be more parking spaces where you can top up your battery.

Multiple batteries might be a better option, scalable using one two or three packs depending on the vehicle but all a standard size/voltage. |

with a pay as you go providers could rent drive spaces from those that don't have cars for parking. May reduce traffic and car delivery time as it could be held locally instead of coming from a central parking area.
Would need something like induction loop charging

Garage space rental is already a solid business model in some cities. We could get €200 a month for our garage space in Valencia if we could be arsed with the bureaucracy.

Hydrogen is here already as I get to drive one at work. I also know the Met have just bought 20 of them after I spoke to one at the filling station. Fill up is similar to petrol and real use range is about 250 miles. The big issue with hydrogen is producing it which is currently an inefficient energy conversion process and brings other issues if reforming is used. The efficiency issue will undoubtedly get better and hydrogen will be a realistic alternative. Visit the M25 Cobham services if you want to see a hydrogen station. |

I've been wanting an electric/hybrid car for ages now, but I've needed the numbers to stack up before I can justify it....
Up utill now I've been campaigning a Finn, so the need for towing is essential, and other than a Tesla (can't afford one) and an Outlander PHEV (poor electric range, dreadful mpg on fossil fuels) there's next to no options for this. Now it looks like I'll be a bit on the light side for the Finn next year, opting for a smaller/lighter boat will allow me to roofrack it, but even so, I cant justify the purchase cost until my current car gives up. When it does, I'll be buying a 2nd hand Vauxhall Ampera/ Chevrolet Volt (50 mile range, 50mpg) that I can plug in to our 100% renewable electricity, and enjoy super-cheap, guilt free commuting, then on my weekend runs down to Portland we'll get a combined equiv of 75mpg each way. The bizarre thing is that the Ampera appears to be the best PHEV available, yet was only built 2011-14 - I know it was chuffing expensive when new, but even so, you'd expect tech and usability to have improved since then, not got worse.... |
